Shortly after we got Pepsi last January, I searched the net to see if I could find any details.
Eventually, I got to www.greyhound-data.com, input her (Irish) ear markings, which took me to her full pedigree. I've now updated owner details with my e-mail and input a photo - this may just be of use if she gets lost.
Hi Ron, we've actually started doing this for all the homeless dogs we get handed in (if we can figure out or have time to get the tattoo's!). If you check out the 'sister' site to the Greyhound Database - www.bgrd.co.uk - and click 'Search for Greyhounds' you'll see the Greyhound Awareness League listed with some of the current homeless hounds..
When the dogs come into our care and we know the tattoo's we update the Greyhound Database to say the dog is available for homing through GAL, once it's homed we put a note to say it's been homed by GAL but leave our email address as the contact, from there it's up to the new owner if they want to update the details.
I'd certainly advise all new or current owners to do this (you can also put a nice piccy of your dog there aswell!) When we get a report of a found dog if it's not on the GAL database I always check the Greyhound Data site to see if I can find it there, so far this year we've reunited 3 lost dogs through this method (thankfully the RGT do the same as us - enough said!)
I looked up both sites with a lot of interest. Do you know of a similar website that registers lurchers in the same way?
I'm lucky enough to know Vegas's parentage as Glenda investigated him when he arrived at GAL but I know there must be some lurcher Mums and Dads out there who would be interested to find out their dog's pedigree. Or is registering a dog in this way peculiar to the RACING greyhound industry and not for a sighthound bred for another purpose?
Don't know of a site that does this for lurchers. They are so many and varied that it would probably be nigh on impossible.
Vegas is a Hancock lurcher so is tattooed which made tracing his history so much easier. Though in saying that, even Mr Hancock doesn't keep very complete records except for his own breeding history, i.e. owners or outcomes.
To answer the next question - David Hancock breeds this particular lurcher and he's famous for it. Most often they're used for hunting. Vegas was bred from one of DH's bearded collie studs and a greyhound bitch.
Thanks for this, Glenda. I couldn't find a site that uses a lurcher's tattoes to register it and trace its ancestry. And you're right, David Hancock's lurchers are quite famous, so it's lucky you were able to trace Vegas's origins using his tattoes. I'll have a go at tracing his mother's (the greyhound's) line.
I have to say that David Hancock's dogs are beautiful! My brother has 2 lurchers bought directly from him. Leah is about10 (although sometimes she forgets that she is an old lady!) and is 3/4 bearded collie and 1/4 greyhound. She is a big, beautiful, scruffy, stubborn girl! Kendal on the other hand, is 1/4 beardie and 3/4 grey - he is almost always thought to be a greyhound by strangers! He is a big boy, just turned 7 years old, and is the biggest wuss you could ever wish to meet! It's definitely Leah who rules the roost at mums!
My brother tells tales of his 2 trips to Hancock's place. The number of dogs and the massive variety in sizes! Some very docile, and some that would seem to take your arm off! I've read a couple of his books, and he genuinely seems to be a very nice man!
Right, that's enough of the DH fanclub!

I've heard that Hancock lurchers are extremely good looking dogs. Vegas, if he could talk, would tell you himself how handsome he is. But he doesn't have to! It's in every step he takes, particularly when he spots another dog. He goes immediately into a dressage type of walk - where his front paws high step. What a poser! He's saying, "Look at me - I'm drop dead gorgeous!" Quite a lot of GAL members know Vegas - maybe because he's so distinctive with his grey merle coat and blue eyes.
Not long after we adopted Vegas, Billy was walking him in the park and an older woman on a bicycle stopped and said, "Who's this beautiful big boy, then?" Billy replied, "Well... my name's Billy - oh and the dog's called Vegas!" What it is to live with two enormous egos!
I haven't read any of David Hancock's books myself - but he does sound interesting, so I'll add him to my book queue. Your brother sounds as if he's a great fan anyway, if he's gone back to get another dog from him!
I think my brother would possibly have more, but mum has put her foot down with a firm hand!!
I can remember seeing Vegas before you got him (he was a GAL dog wasn't he?) and thinking to myself "who would abandon a DH dog? Someone will have paid a lot of money for him". He's a very lucky (yes, and handsome!) boy to have found such a loving home!!

A Happy New Year to you all. Apologies for taking so long to post again, but the holiday period diverted me!
Pepsi's tattoo is "XXITR", indicating that she is registered in Ireland. Her registered name is Rutland Carrie, originally from Kilkenny, then sold on to Sunderland. It all makes very interesting reading - I'll try the other site you mention and see what it produces.
