A Cautionary Tale

There was a story in the East Lothian Courier last week which is a cautionary tale about 'cowboy' daycare facilities.
A lady who used a dog daycare in the area left her Siberian Husky/Japanese Akita puppy there only to receive a call to say the dog had died in a freak accident.
Apparently the facility, which on its website warned the dogs would be left unsupervised for periods, had left the puppy in a garden with a choke lead they had put on it after it arrived, and it became caught on a gatepost while it was 'unsupervised' and strangled itself.
An investigation did not find the facility at fault however it is a warning to everyone who considers these daycare facilities to look at the small print.
Thankfully the place Mason goes is staffed at all times and does not use choke leads, ironically the woman who runs my place told me she heard about the incident from the owner of the Akita when she phoned her a month after its death asking if she could look after her new Akita puppy.
She could not because it isn't in her area, however, it begs the question, if you work full time why would you take on a puppy that needs proper training and also, why would you pay someone who admits your dog will be left on its own, when you could leave it alone in your own house???

Hi Marie

It's a great pity about that little pup - with proper supervision by his/her owner it would've been around today. Some people get pups when really an older dog would suit them much better. It certainly seems so in this case when the owner doesn't have the time to train it.

The fact that this woman who works all day is getting an Akita or Husky is just rediculous. High maintenance high energy dogs.grrrrr. I see so many husky pups being walked around here it makes my blood boil, an elderly couple nearby have 2... how stupid is that, these dogs are probably the ultimate working dogs, and just taking them out for a stroll 2 or 3 times a day is unfair. Mind you I saw a young couple with 2 adult huskies being pulled along the beach on a big scootery thing by their dogs, the dogs were running and barking and having a ball.

Anyway rant over.
