Stopper Pads
Permalink Closed

Pearly is the most accident prone greyhound known to man. We've gone through broken tail, countless cuts and brusies and torn dew claws since we've had her. Qe are the Vets best cutomer and bandages are a common sight on her!

Last night she tore both stopper pads after having a short 2 min run. She gets loads of walks and her pads are toughened by road walking. Any tips out there on how to toughen up the stopper pads?

Steve, I can sympathise. Vegas has been accident prone lately too and had a badly cut pad (open in a half-moon like another mouth) back in January just after healing from a long gash on the front of his foot. But what are the stopper pads? Are they the big pads behind the four smaller ones under the toes?

I know that some guitarists harden their chord playing finger tips by dipping them in surgical spirit. It also soothes the soreness of the growing corns on their fingers. It could be worth a try for Pearly's pads - maybe she'd make a great guitarist!! I also used surgical spirit on my son's tummy button after he was born to harden it until the cut umbilical chord fell off. But I'd be careful if Pearly tended to lick the surgical spirit after it was applied and you'd be better checking with your vet before trying it to see if there's any reason not to use it

I'd also let her off lead mainly on grass if possible. I know how enthusiastic Vegas is when he's off the lead and his personal safety goes out the window when he's chasing a squirrel or rabbit!

Good luck, Steve. Hope Pearly keeps well away from accidents from now on.

Christine

Cheers Christine - the stopper pad is the wee pad (like a ball) just behind where the front leg folds - it acts like a cushion. when running.

She only runs on grass but that doesn't stop her cuts - she's a wee daftie at times. Too fast for her own good.
