Flakey bits

Hiya,

Over the last week Ruby has developed flakey skin over a large part of her back, sides, belly and legs. It just seems to have happened suddenly, although previously I would find the odd bit of something looking like dandruff when grooming her, but couldn't find the source - now it's like a snowstorm!

She dosn't seem bothered and isn't scratching or anything, and is fine being brushed. She is also shedding a lot, but I don't know what is normal for her at this time of year as I've only had her 4 weeks. Her fur doesn't seem any less or thinner so I'm guessing the shedding is normal.

Could it be contagous to other dogs? We were going to come along on Sunday to Strathclyde park, but obviously not if there is a risk of spreading this to other dogs.

Has anyone seen anything similar?

Think it could be a visit to the vet in the morning

Ruby has just been neutered hasn't she??

Blue's coat changed and he got dandruff after he was done. We have one of those zoom grooms and just kept brushing him a couple of times a day and it cleared. Might be something to do with change in hormones?

Also Blue was quite bald when we got him so his skin changed a bit before new hair started to grow.

Only other thing I could think of is have you washes her recently? Maybe need to change shampoos?

Not sure any of this is any help. Hope it clears up soon.

Amanda

Hi

Once had to take Sascha to the vet when her dandruff got really bad and her skin looked dry.  She checked her skin for any horrible beasties under the microscope (that couldn't be seen by the naked eye) - luckily nothing & then gave us a special shampoo to bathe her in.  Seemed to do the trick.

Flakey skin and dandruff can be very common at this time of year as hounds begin to shed their coats in the spring.  We find that ours have a heavy shedding for spring and onother in autumn, and during that the dandruff increases.

You can try Aloe Vera on skin, or putting a small ammount of Cod Liver Oil or Olive Oil in their dinner to shine up their coats and cut down on the dry skin.

I agree. Brushing Vegas's coat with a zoom groom on a regular basis is excellent for keeping flaky bits of dandruff out of his fur and getting rid of loose hair which he has a lot of, especially at this time of year.

I also agree with Jason - I give Vegas a pilchard in sunflower oil once or twice a week mixed in with his dried food. I drain off the oil first of course and mash it in. He loves it and I'm sure the oily fish helps to keep his coat shiny. Best of luck with Ruby's coat. Let us know how she gets on.

Hi Janet, yeah I wouldn't be overly concerned at this stage, remember Ruby has spent her whole life in a cold outdoor kennel, and now within a month she's discovering the joys of central heating, the neutering could also be playing a part in this and also as already posted the days are getting a bit warmer so all the hounds will be shedding a bit of hair in the next few weeks.

Keep grooming her, I always find the best brush to use is the rubber hound glove or a rubber 'curry' brush and I would defo reccommend a spot of olive oil in her food each night to keep the coat nice and shiny.

We'll see you on Sunday and no doubt you'll have a lot of spectators to examine her and give opinions!...

Thanks for all the advice.

I got a rubber grooming glove and it works much better than the horsehair hound glove I had been using. She must be about a kilo lighter now all the hair is gone, the dandruff is worse then ever though.

Ruby would like to say thanks to Jason and Christine for the pilchards - woof

We'll be along at the walk tomorrow so hope to see you all there.

Harry has very flaky skin at the moment too. We're grooming him every day to get his coat shining and he's getting the odd sardine now and again.

I think I'll try aloe vera as I've heard from loads of people that it's good stuff. Do I just rub a wee bit into the dry patches every day?

Fiona

ps: what's a "Zoom groom"?

Hi Fiona

A zoom groom is a plastic/rubber tool that fits in your hand. It looks almost like one of those things you get in bath sets for massaging your skin to increase circulation. Its got cone shaped combs and is very good at getting all the moulting fluffy hair out of dogs' coats. I got mine in the GAL shop at one of the events. You'll probably be able to buy one on-line. Happy grooming!

Thaks, Christine - I think it must be the same grooming glove that we have. The packaging is long gone so now we just call it "the rubber thing"!!
