Weird Behaviour from Greyhound Bitch
Permalink Closed

Hi Everyone,

I'm a new proud owner of Missy an 18mth old greyhound. She is settling in VERY well but has started some strange behaviour and was wondering if anyone could try and give me an explanation as to why she should be doing the following:

Missy has started to mount my male un-neutered labrador. It doesn't bother Missy if she mounts his head or his butt and holds him tight around the waist.

Does anyone have any ideas why she should do this and the best way to stop it? For info she has been neutered recently.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards
Katrina Young

Hi Katrina, Im sure this display means she is going to be the dominant female, the top dog so to speak. Her behaviour will soon settle once she has proven her rank in your pack.

Thank you for the prompt response - I half expected it to be something like that but IF anyone else might have an idea please post it here.

I've had and been in contact with dogs all my life and I've never seen this before. I don't doubt you but just wondering if anyone else has had anything similar with their dogs.

Thanks again
Katrina

Hi Katrina, I had a foster dog called Jack straight from spca and he tried to mount everything. He was young and just didnt know how to behave with other dogs. He soon learned from my lot, but if they have been kept apart from other dogs then this behaviour is, not knowing the doggy language. That was Jacks problem and it soon settled down.

Hi Katrina - I have sent you an email about this problem but in essence it would seem that the behaviour probably stems from the testosterone and progesterone that's currently circulating between Max and Missy. I would recommend neutering of Max asap - I seem to remember, he was quite well equipped and so Missy probably fancies him quite a lot!

Thanks everyone

I guess Missy is just in LOVE !

We have started to stop her from mounting poor old Max ! But we tried to let all the dogs sort out their own pecking orders but the girls are too similar and stubborn so, us humans have had to step in and sort the disputes out instead.

Missy's love advances have reduced a bit and will no doubt be resolved soon and Missy's dominating behaviour to our lurcher Dusty has stopped for now after again we stepped in to sort things out.

Max will always be bottom dog as he is completely submissive because of the abuse he received prior to us getting him. Would you believe that an 86 year old man owned him and Max is a very robust and larger black labrador (pedigree). Max's owner was put into an old peoples home and his daughter took his three dogs (two of which were greyhounds). I've only just remembered that Max used to be around greyhounds so is perhaps used to the advances!! Just a thought !!

The daughter couldn't find homes for the greyhounds and had them put down

So knowing what was Max's fate would be if we didn't take him; we took him home - Max was neglected, he was hand shy (and still is),he was twice the weight he should have been (close to 9 stone in weight) and was close to a heart attack!

I am glad to report Max is now half the weight he used to be and is a happy healthy and active dog again but SO submissive and doesn't spur Missy's advances

But glad to report that harmony is starting to return to our household and I am sure Missy will find her place within our pack. Anyway a point to note we DO NOT give up easily on any of our dogs. It was a two year struggle with Max but I doubt it will be that with Missy.

Thanks again for all your advice it is most appreciated.
