In the last week or so, Pearly's once-pristine coat has gone very dandruffy and she has dry bits under her "armpits" under her front legs. Normally we'd whop a bit of oil in her food, but she's actually feeling quite greasy along her back and around her rump. No amount of brushing gets rid of it, and - in fact - it makes it worse. She's shedding at the moment too. It's more than likely that she's feeling a bit stressed as Harry settles in as we've noticed that she got a bit flaky when she's been poorly in the past.
Would a nice bath help her? We have some aloe vera doggy shampoo (and Nicki's fab tip about the watering can, of course!).
If she's had a bath before and enjoyed it, go for it. If not, I think it would be better to avoid distressing her unnecessarily - Pearly has had quite a bit to cope with just lately and given her sensitive personality she might think you don't love her anymore She will shed her coat quite dramatically at this time of year - I know I have a white and brindle myself - little white fluffy balls of fur are floating across the floor, looks even worse when the sun is shining.
Hmm.... we've never bathed her so we don't know for sure if she won't like it. I think this may be one of those rare occasions on which I defer to Steve!
It's not so much the shedding, it's the yukky dandruff and the greasy feeling - she's usually so soft and silky. She's not scratching though, so maybe we'll hang fire on the bath for the moment.
Have you tried the Bob Martin (thinks thats the right name??) Rub downs? Bit like baby wipes to clean the fur?? Might just take the top layer of grease off. Blue is rather flakey at mo but I think alot of the dogs are the same with spring coming they all seem to be shedding!
Blue loves his bath and has been known to stand in the bathroom when the kids are having theirs and wait until they have finished to he can get in! (we do change the water of course...)
Pearly's a girl right? Yet you're still not sure if she'll like the bath? My guess is she'll have the whole bathroom kitted out with scented candles and bath bombs before you know it.
I know he'll hate me for telling you all so, but our son Martin did that once until I put a bolt on the outside of the toilet door!! He was copying the Collie X we had at the time. But it hasn't done him a bit of harm - he's 6' 3" and full of s...!
Seriously though, I'd go ahead and try to bath Pearly - if it seems to be giving her stress I'd stop it. I don't think Vegas really likes a bath - he tolerates it. Remember to have help on hand - someone to stand by with a big bath towel to wrap her up and stop her shaking excess water all over the walls!
