Hi Folks, just thought I'd post a wee update on the (still) unnamed dog with the broken hock that was the feature of the latest Fostering appeal a few days ago.
Well, he was picked up late last night from his trainer by Dawn and he spent the night with her getting some much earned TLC. He was then taken to Greenock to meet Nina his new foster mum (with a rather long stop en route to the vets for x-rays!) Nina says he settled in fine however is still a bit zonked out on pain killers and anti biotics and is also temporarily confined to an indoor kennel so as to give his leg a rest.
Nina promises to choose a nice name for him over the weekend, he's about 4 yrs old a nice big Fawn boy with a lovely nature.
As for his leg, well he's been given pain killers and antibiotics, the leg is pretty badly swollen. His x-rays have confirmed his hock is REALLY badly broken in one place and fractured in another. The vet has given us a number of options with the leg which the GAL committee will be discussing over the weekend and he'll be going back to the vet on Monday for further treatment.
This is a really beautiful dog and whoever ends up with this big boy will be very lucky.
He loved being in a home, although he was a bit confused when he saw his reflection in my glass door! He never complained once about his leg. The trainer called him Sandy! But in true Greyhound fashion, he completely ignore this name. Andy sounded better!
We'll the as yet unnamed dog now has a name - SONNY
Everyone think good thoughts tomorrow for him as he has an 8:30 am appointment with the vet. He'll be getting his broken hock pinned, it's going to be a tricky op but to be honest the only other option was to amputate the leg and we felt we needed to give Sonny the chance to retain the leg.
Sunny is in the vets as we speak so cross your fingers and toes for him!!! He is a gorgous, very brave boy!!! He has such a gentle nature and you'll all love him!!! Don't know how were going to let him go!! and we've only had him for a few dayss!! he loves his food especially sardines, and has even stared to wag his tail!! Shera has been brill with him, letting him sleep in her bed and not getting all jealous when he gets loads of hugs!!
I'l let you know how he gets on with his operation!
I felt the same way about him, has a lovely nature and so handsome into the bargain, a real cracker. Someone is going to be very lucky!!! If he had been cat safe that lucky person could have been me.
Let us know how he got on, I've been thinking about him all day.
Hi Folks, just spoke to Nina, Sunny got through his operation very well, he's still a bit groggy but thats to be expected. The operation was a success and the poor lad now has a large screw holding most of his leg together! He's to return to the vet on Thursday for a checkup and to change his dressings. He's now on strict bed rest for the next 4 - 6 weeks.
Thanks to everyone who's been asking after him and special thanks to Nina, Adam & Shera for looking after the invalid so well (including having to carry him up and down the stairs to their house!), Nina promised to send some piccies later tonight so hopefully you'll all get to see him soon!
Poor Sunny was up crying most of last night and was very stressed, we managed to get about 3 hours sleep i've got matchsticks in my eyelids to keep me awake in work!!
He couldn't get comfy, just had to give him extra hugs to try and get him to settle. Once the alarm went off this morning and he had his breakfast guess who was sound asleep without a peep from him while we were trying to keep our eyes open!!
He seems much more content today, went home at lunchtime to be greeted by a very waggy tailed boy!! left him with a chew stick to keep him quite for a bit!!
Its amazing how hes adapted, he goes on missions about this house hobbling about on three legs, we have to slow him down so he doesn't hurt himself!
I'l keep you all updated on his progress! hopefully he (and us) will get a good sleep tonight!
Poor Sunnys anaesthetic must have worn off by that time poor boy.
Having said that, he did this to me the night I had him, and after loads of TLC he settled back down. Like you, when I had to go to work, he fell asleep!
Hopefully everday his leg will get better, and it will be a distance memory for him.
Sunny's doing really really well, much more comfortable now, doesn't seem to be in any pain apart from yesterday he was in his cage and lying on his back his leg has got stuck in between the bars!! when he tried to turn over again he started crying. He's wont be doing that again!!!
He is just such a good boy, he really is the cutiest!! not a peep from him at night now, wags his tail all the time and is always coming over for you to rub his neck!!
Taking him back to the vets after work today just to get his dressing changed and make sure everything is going good Will let you know what the vet says.
Hi Folks, Sunny made a quest appearance at the Glasgow dog walk today, he managed (with the help of a harness) to hobble from the car, accross the car park and back again. Nina says he's just beginning to put a tiny bit of weight on his bad leg so fingers crossed he's on the mend now. He's such a handsome chap!!
It was great to see Sunny at Strathclyde Park. He looked great. He managed his wee walk over the car park.
You are doing a great job with him, Nina and Adam. It's so rewarding to see him progress under your care. I can just imagine him with his legs in the air.
Just a wee update on Sunny, we were away for a few days there so Rachel was looking after Sunny, his leg was doing really well, was using it all the time until Sunday night when Rachel noticed that he wasn't using it. Off to the vets he went on Monday morning and the poor lad has a couple of sores on his leg where the bandage and splint is rubbing against his skin. He was given pain killers and was all bandaged up again. He is using it again but i think he is scared to use it at times. We picked Sunny up on Tuesday (adam was hoping he would be using it and would be a pro on the stairs!!!) So its back to lifting him up and down the stairs, adams poor back!! He is the bestest dog (not biased at all) he gets so excited when we come back from work, to my horror he is even trying to jump up on us!, he forgets bout his leg.
We will be taking him to Rachels on Saturday for the awareness day, he has a space reserved in her kitchen floor for when he gets tired!!!
Great to hear how Sunny is getting on - pity he's had a setback with his bandage rubbing a sore on his leg, but I'm sure with the extra padding he has now, he'll be fine in a couple of days.
I don't think we'll get to Rachel's on Saturday unfortunately - Billy has a new batch of trainees and has to start work earlier on Saturday. But I'm sure Sunny will get lots of cuddles and sympathy on Rachel's kitchen floor. I met him at the very wet Strathclyde Park walk a couple of weeks ago and he's a very handsome boy with a great nature. You're doing a grand job with him! No doubt I'll catch up with you at another GAL event soon.
Just updating you all on Sunny's Progress!! He was at the vet yesterday getting his bandage changed, he still has a couple of sores but they are healing well. He doesn't need the splint anymore, the vet has put a padded but loose bandage on him to stop him getting anymore sores and so he can start building up the joints and muscles again. He had his operation nearly four weeks now so will only have the bandage on for another couple of weeks!! It has flown in, it seems like we have had him for ages the way he has settled in.
Glad to hear Sunny is doing so well. He's such a gorgeous boy and you've done a great job with him. He was looking great at Rachel and Eddies last Saturday. You've been through such a lot together you'll just have to keep him!!??

Well.......we'll see!!! He's just so well behaved and him and Shera get on better than we ever thought!! I've read on the forum about what dog is 'Top Dog' etc but at the moment there isn't any sign of one of them wanting to be top dog. They lie in each others bed, they don't try and eat each others food, share their toys etc!!
Nina, it sounds very promising. Sunny's leg is getting better and he's getting on really well with Shera. Bet you're glad that the weather's a bit drier - keeping a bandage dry is a nightmare in wet weather, especially one that covers most of the leg.
Sunny has now mastered the art of walking up and down the stairs with his broken leg!!
As Shera has been teaching him he now trys (to my horror) to do what she does and get up the stairs in two big leaps!! He is now at the stage where he is forgetting that the bandage is on so thinks its alright to run about daft!! As he is not in any pain anymore his personality is really coming out, he just loves his cuddly toys, tearing them to pieces!! He's back at the vets tommorrow to change his bandage so will find out how long he has until it comes off
Sunny must be feeling a lot better and that's brilliant! And it's great he's getting up and down stairs, but I can understand how terrified you feel when he's running about in case it's too soon.
Hope it won't be too long before he gets the bulky bandage off. Let us know how he gets on at the vets tomorrow. I'll be thinking about him.
