The worst thing that has ever happened to me was when I had two with me, one ok with small dogs the other most definately not. A flea bitten mongrel came up to them and preceeded to mount Charlie, who was male and the least tolerant, Charlie immediately swung round growling and my other one (timid) Tig joined in. I had two extremely angry greyhounds and the owner of the other dog was about the size of your little finger in the distance (taking no responsibility at all). I had no choice but to get my son to pick up a nearby stick in order to beat the other dog off!
This experience left me uneasy about going out with two on my own for a long while. It also left me with the eternal question a) muzzle them and leave them vulnerable, unable to defend themselves, or b) leave them unmuzzled but able to bite if necessary.
I have decided that it is unfair to leave them defenceless!
Yes, I'm afraid we all get our turn. A few days ago it was Tyler & Max against cross Rotweiler and mongrel!! So glad I wasn't out on my own that morning.
John had taken Max & Tyler on lead into a bushy grassy bit well into the side of the path in the park as he knew the 2 loose dogs were nearby, but next thing the rottie cross & mongy came rip roaring up towards them in a very unfriendly manner. Max & Tyler had to defend themselves and Tyler did manage to get one of the opponents onto the ground! Their owner approached and John asked if he could put them on leads, he replied "your dogs are vicious - I don't have any leads on me"!!! The owner attempted to pull the 2 dogs away but they came back for some more - aaarrghh!!
(don't know how but Tyler came home with a cut between her toes! - just glad it wasn't worse)
I think I've already ranted and raved about this some other time but I was in Falkirk, socialising Charlie at the time. Was stood outside of WH Smiths waiting for my sister when some young lads walked past and said loud enough for me to hear...... "You should feed yer dug" - carried on walking laughing.
So me being as gobby as I am shouted after them ....
"He's a bl**dy Greyhound you MORON !!! - THAT'S WOT A GREYOUND LOOKS LIKE!!"
It can be so annoying sometimes when you and your dogs are walking along quite happily ,when suddenly sum big hairy thing comes running round the corner, it happened to me just the other day a golden retriever and not an owner in sight Sasha was having kittens and Cas was getting quite upset , then the owner appeared after what seemed like an eternity :oh sorry he gets a bit excited of the lead:, Then today two people OK with Sasha , but pulling their dogs as far away from Cas as they could with a look of horror on their faces. To which I said it,s Ok ,she is on her lead ,there was of course no reply. There will always be some that will react in this way, so i feel we just have to keep advertising how wonderful greys realy are.

I'm so glad I read this as I thought it was just me these things happened too. I've had Kirk and Misty out a few times, on the lead, Kirk muzzled as he's very keen on small furry creatures, everyone happy, until, as a lot of you have said, along comes the carefree owners letting their dogs run around mine Kirk goes mental and it's like he's on a piece of elastic me trying desparately to keep hold of him while Misty joins in cause it looks great fun.
They then look at me as if can she not have more control, MINE ARE ON THE LEAD AND MUZZLED!!!!!!
Was just out for my usual morning stroll with the 2 dogs this morning (a bit later than usual), took Ross (my son) & his 2 wee pals on the walk that my 2 go on every morning. Anyway as usual let Noah off the lead for a wee jolly (Dinah was still on hers cause the kids were having shots each at walking the dog & she is soo good she just potters beside them Noah on the other hand would TAKE THEM FOR A WALK!!) around the football pitches & there was a lady jogging towards me - she stopped dead on her tracks & started to scream at me "GET THAT BLOODY DOG ON A LEAD" to which I replied "WHY????" he was absolutley no where near her "THAT DOG SHOULD NOT BE OFF A LEAD GET IT BACK ON ITS LEAD RIGHT NOW!!! HOW DARE YOU HAVE YOUR DOG OFF A LEAD IT SHOULD BE WALKED ON A LEAD BLAH BLAH BLAH" So of course I got Noah & put him back on his lead & when I got closer to the woman she said "It's a bloody disgrace that you cannot go for a run without bloody dogs being off leads, I am scared of dogs they should not be off their leads"
How the hell was I supposed to know she was scared Some people are just so unpleasant - anyway told her what I thought of her & her ideas & as we continued our walk was thinking what else I could say to her if I bumped into her again - fortunatley I never but if I had I would have said "BUY A TREADMILL IF YOU ARE SCARED OF DOGS & STAY IN YOUR HOUSE"
So sorry for rambling on but some folk are just so RUDE
The one that got me lately was when I phoned the local council dog walks, to be told " yes thats fine as long as you know that the dogs of lead have to stay within 2 metres of the owners" ? how do you tell a dog that, and what about all the other dog owners that are not with our walks and are letting their dogs go nuts. It just beggers belief, I just agreed with him and thanked him very much Nora

I wouldn't take any chances at an organised walk and would keep my dogs on the lead.
As for keeping dogs within 2 metres of the owners, I would say a well trained dog wouldn't run off far from the owner anyway, but greyhounds can be distracted by small furry things etc.
And whilst I'm in the mood for a good old rant.... Why is it, on a fair few occasions, i have been walking Blue on the lead and some white westie owners grab their dog and put them on the lead. Their dogs usually then start pulling like mad and barking at Blue. Blue just ignores them but the owners give me such filthy looks as if I'm the one at fault. (Don't mean to tar all white westie owners with same brush sure most are very nice!) Amanda
Dunno why they are giving you dirty looks, but I sure wish more dog owners would put theirs on a lead when they spot another dog on a lead (if they can't otherwise control them).
Had countless westies and other small dogs run right up to my on-lead dogs - luckily neither of mine like snacking on small dogs, but Oscar is very uncomfortable with dogs of any size running up to him (thinks they want to attack), so that is my major rant
One time I was walking both mine on leads and this guy sitting on the wall of the park (not walking next to his dog understand, but having a nice rest on the wall) says 'are they OK with small dogs', as his small out of control dog that obviously liked running up to every dog in sight came bounding into view. To which i snootily replied 'My dogs are on LEADS', then watched with amusement while he tried to capture his wayward terrier! Maybe if he's worried about his small dog getting eaten by others he should keep it under better control!
lol. Yeah I always say "Yeah, but she always beats me!" in reply to the "Do you race her?" question.
Kayri was at the vets this morning and as she isn't great with other dogs I put her muzzle on. The vets was mobbed and Kayri was shaking like a leaf, tail firmly clapped between her legs. I sat down next to a woman with a puppy in her arms. She said "Aw, that's a shame, having to wear a muzzle." I smiled but politely pointed out that if my dog took the face off her puppy she would be the first to complain that it should have been muzzled!!
You can't win with some folk!
Kayri is a quite distinctive bright/stripy brindle colour. Wish I had a pound for every child that asked if she was a "tiger dog". Wee souls!
