dislocated toe joint?
Permalink Closed

Hi all,

Daisy's toe on her back left foot seems to be at right angles to her foot.  The trainer we adopted her from suggested it was dislocated - if so, this would have happened months ago - she ran upstairs and squealed as if she'd hurt something but I couldn't see anything wrong at the time.  A few weeks later we noticed the end of the toe had turned inwards.  The vet couldn't see a problem (great vet eh?) but i'm convinced the trainer is right.  It's not always at the same angle - can it resolve itself from time to time?

What is the answer to this?  Can the toe be re-located or removed?  Seems extreme but she does hop around on it occasionally, tho it doesn't seem to bother her most of the time. I don't want her to suffer by not doing anything about it but, then again, i don't want her to suffer if we can do something to help!!

your help would be most appreciated.

Hiya

The only thing I could suggest is that you request a second opinion from your vet. They HAVE to by law refer you to another vet for a 2nd opinion if you insist on this....

It does sound like this toe is still causing some concern for Daisy so you really need to find an answer to it. It may be that your vet simply isnt comfortable/fully aware of Greyhound type injuries (although I would hope he could recognise a dislocated toe!!!)

Greys cope very well indeed with amputated toes - GAL has rehomed many GHs missing digits (professional hazard for the poor lambs unfortunately) & they dont have any bother coping with one less toe in the slightest & you (as an owner/passer by) wouldnt even notice unless you really looked up close.

Dont worry about it too much but do seek a second opinion through your vet (dont go to another practice off your own back as this does not go down well - it has to be your vet that refers you - a fee maybe involved in this so ask 1st)

Give poor wee Daisy a hug from me...Id also be slightly wary about some of the things trainers say - unless you know this guy personally, they have been known to 'colour' the truth on occassions....just another angle to look at things from...

Let us know how you get on! Take care

Hiya

Not sure if I can give any advice, but Florence dislocated her toe on her front right foot last year while going full pelt round the park. Much squealing ensued & she had to be carried back home, then start to the vet.
She got a injection of pain killer start into the toe, ouch, plus painkiller jab to do her 24hrs. She was then splintered for about 2 weeks with only lead walk for another 2/3 weeks.
Luckly there hasn't seem to be any problems since.

Hope Daisy gets better soon.

Hi

took Daisy to the baby-dog doctor tonite and he suggested we leave well alone, as the toe isn't causing her any pain or disability.  this is mainly because it occurred so long ago.  the toe won't pop back into place - even if it did, it would almost certainly pop back out anyway.  he said that a pin was possible but there is a risk of infection and/or rejection of the pin - the ligaments are most probably torn and they would need to be reconstructed etc etc.....all in all, i think it's best left.  she seemed fine with him prodding & poking at it so it can't be uncomfortable and it doesn't stop her tearing round the lounge and up and down the stairs !

i will be keeping a close eye on it and if anything gets worse, i'll re-consider.

thank you all for your advice and support.
