Well 1st night at beginners agility was a resounding success!! Im so proud of my little boy

We got 1 to 1 training as it was our 1st time & Murphy really suprised me. We tried a few jumps (once Id caught him from his introductory lap of the field once the lead was removed *doh* - that out of his system he settled down well..). He stayed brilliantly at one side of the jump as I walked off & called him over. Stepped this us to doing 4 jumps in a row with me standing at the far end. Stay command working wonders *phew*.

Next was the 'Dog walk' . This is actually quite high (my shoulder height) & narrow so as I coaxed him along it with a bit of cheese the girls caught the various limbs as they fell off. Not the prettiest of sights as he was shaking like a leaf the whole way. Did this several times on the lead with me holding onto collar. 4th or 5th time over & the shakes had stopped as he was so transfixed to getting hold of the cheese...so off came the lead...& he went up, along & down the walk perfectly about 3 times!! GO MURPH!!!

The 'A' frame was next & Ive never witnessed anything like it! Frog in a blender would be the most accurate description of Murphy trying to get up this thing, his legs totally went to jelly & were all over the place bless him. Came down the other side beautifully as well.
Did this a few more times with the trainer hauling him up one side & me calling him & making happy noises like a loony from the down ramp. He really did not like being hauled up so off came the lead & he zoomed up & zoomed down all excitedly about 4 times with big flying jumps at me at the end. He was so chuffed with himself!! *cue mum welling up a bit*...

We then popped in a wee cheeky jump before the ramp. He stayed beautifully & then flew both obstacles like a wee pro

It cant possibly all go so swimmingly tho, just as I was envisaging our 1st agility competition trophy we had to tackle the "Tunnel"

We tried & tried, Murphy cried & cried, mum got stuck in tunnel with just my backside hanging out one end whilst dog pulled me through other end by lead all whilst yelping like a pig being taken to the slaughterhouse, slipped his collar & legged it to the exit gate from the field. I just about needed surgically removed from tunnel & caught dog...maybe next week....

For the rest of the session we practiced more jumps & jump combinations to try & end on a good note & Murphy, once he had stopped running to the exit gate after every jump to desperately get to the car & away from evil tunnel monster, flew them brilliantly with just a few run outs.

I am so chuffed!! He is utterly knackered & a definate star in the making I think!!
Cant wait for week 2...just need to find a few dark holes to shove Murf through before then...did I say shove? clearly meant coax gently...

Oh Suzanne - so funny!! Can't wait for next week's instalment. But well done, Murph - you've come on leaps and bounds in your first agility class - and you'll soon master the terrors of the terrible tunnel!

sssshhh guys, Murphy here! gotta make this quick as mums in bed but just had to warn you all about what happened to me today!! If your owners ever take you somewhere with lots of poles & high things that they force to go over then watch out...

it was the scariest thing I have ever seen...the biggest green monster EVER ate my mum & tried to come after me! It had lightening fast reflexes as I didnt even see it eat mum but boy does it have a fast digestive system, as I could see mum coming out of its other end -feet 1st! problem was that she still had hold of my lead so I was getting dragged into its big green gaping mouth & all I could hear was mum calling to me from the depths of its belly...no sireee - I was reversing like crazy & crying for help but all the other dogs couldnt hear me...then the monsters helpers tried pushing me back in, I was really scared now. No way was I going to be a sacraficial goat - I had seen a programme about that once...

mum was desperately trying to get back out as her hand appeared in its mouth holding onto my lead for dear life. I tried to pull her to safety. I did honest, but my collar gave way & I just ran as fast as I could the other way. I looked back in time to see the monster had now swallowed mum whole like a giant slinky going down stairs & all I could see were her shoes sticking out its bottom. The monster was thrashing about & making horrible wailing noises & I swear I heard it laugh hysterically at me from the depths of its belly!!

I dunno what happened next as I was trying to dig my way out under the fence when suddenly mum appeared. Thankgod she was alive! She looked a bit dishevelled & muddy but I was sooo glad to see her. We stayed well away from the monster after that but I never took my eyes off it again. After I had finished, me & mum went to watch some of the other dogs run about & you will NEVER guess what happened next!

This wee fluffy dog was doing those weavy pole things that had made me feel a bit dizzy earlier when I had tried. She was good. Did them really fast, but I think she got disorientated too as she ran straight into the monsters mouth! My jaw HIT the floor!! But its ok as I dont think the monster liked the taste of her much & poo'd her out quicker than I could blink. Lucky escape eh!!

That thing wont get the better of me next time thats for sure!

ssshhh - think I just heard mum...gotta go

Aww, Murphy - you're so brave and clever! Sounds like you were the star of the class. Next time, if you still feel a bit scared, just ask mum for a wee glug of her wine for some Dutch courage. We all know that she has a goodly supply!

Suzanne - he's a wee trooper! Can't wait to hear how he gets on next week.

Murphy,

You clever, brave little boy!  You do right to stay away from the monster, always be wary of things that can poo almost as fast as they can eat - mum says that's just like me!

Keep us updated on your progress - and what that monster's up to.

Me & Wilma are going to meet Bruce tomorrow - mum says he will become Barney if all goes well!  We'll let you know how the meeting goes!!

Freddy back again.  Dad not long back from that place he goes to sometimes - think it's called work, but never seen him do anything like that so it must be someplace else.

Anyway, hes been reading the mumbo jumbo on here for a while and have just heard something along the lines of "over my dead body" and "need more than winning the lottery"  No idea what that's all about.  Got him sorted ages ago when we got the other half (Wilma for those not in the know!!) and if I behave tomorrow we'll get the baby   He's a sucker for a cute face and a sob story - well look at me and that says it all.

Will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Week 2 was a big success in some ways, need some more work done in other areas...

Heres Murphys school report card so far:

"Must concentrate more in initial 10 mins of class. Being let off the lead at the 1st obstacle does not mean that a 10 minute paddy around the field at top speed, evading capture is either big nor clever. 1st lesson of the day was an actual course, which to his credit, had not been attempted before. Must try harder as Murphys concentration for the jump, dog walk, followed by 3 more jumps, lacked at little with a victory lap after the 1st jump & ducking out the rest.

On a high note, no encouragment at all was required for the elevated dog walk which had him trembling like a jelly last week. Completed this task several times with visible improvement in method and concentration. Keep up the good work!

Murphy showed his true skill & obvious passion when presented with the A frame. Presented with a jump then onto the A frame with jump at other end, Murphy showed the class how to properly do them. Some may have blinked and missed it however the 1st time so Murphy, without hesitation, spun around & flew the combination in the opposite direction just to show off. Most impressive, but would have been better if reverse run had been asked for.

We omitted tackling the monster this week so finished on a combination run of jumps. Top of the class marks go to Murphy as he waited for the rest of the class to tackle the straight run of 4 jumps. All ran out on several occassions. Murphy had clearly been taking his notes & flew all 4 jumps up hill with a massive celebration at the top with his mum - not sure who was happier...& then flew all 4 jumps downhill & just about flattened our camera girl for the day Fiona (FAJ).

All in all, Murphy showed increasing confidence in his ability throughout the class & shows real promise if he would stop with the over-the-top displays at the start of class. 7/10."

*note from Murfs mum : teacher was a bit harsh...the piccies Fiona took will show what a wee star & quick learner he is!! Thats ma boy! *

Hi Suzanne

Murph is clearly having a whale of a time at his agility classes. He's so full of enthusiasm! Can't wait to see the photos - although Fiona might have had a hard time focusing on him. He sounds as if he does the course in a blur.

I can indeed confirm that Murphy was the star of the class! And, naturally, he was by far the most handsome.

Thing is, with his long greyhound legggies, Murphy has a much higher centre of gravity than the other dogs in the class, so these big balances are pretty fearsome. Plus, they've been doing it a lot longer than him. He was THE star on the A-frame (which I thought looked scarier than the tunnel!) and as for the long row of jumps, well, what can I say? The words "absolute natural" come to mind. It was wonderful to see how excited he was when he got over the jumps and the A-frame, and everyone in the class was happy for him. Naturally, Suzanne was one very proud mummy.

I've taken some foaties which I'll load tonight (went straight out with Steve, Harry and Pearly last night so was to knacked when we all got in). It was great fun to watch, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

As promised, here are some piccies of Murphy and Suzanne in action. I think Murphy was incredibly brave to go on the high walk-way, and Suzanne equally as brave to let him!! (I hope you can see these okay. It wasn't the best of evenings, cold and a bit overcast, and the light was fast fading.)

Taking on the first jumps

And getting a wee reward

Approaching the scary high walkway.....

Getting to the top...

And walking beautifully - way to go, Murphy!!

Showing everyone how it's done on the A-frame

And over again, just because he could!

Four in a row - he's off!

Back again.....

And a fraction of a second after he made the last jump - dontcha just hate it when you miss the moment?

LOVE the photos Fiona!! Thankyou so much for standing in the cold for an hour watching us & snapping away! Such a shame about the last one eh!! the big cheesy grin on his face as he cleared it would have been a right picture!!!

I am yet to get a photo of Murphy running (in the 16mths Ive had him!) - forever deleting photos of just a hind leg/tail at the edge of shot *doh*....too fast for his own good (& his mums :)

Wonder if the green monster will rear its ugly head next week??

Great stuff, Suzanne and Murphy! Particularly for Murph going over these jumps. He looked like he was really enjoying himself! The photos are super, Fiona. I see what you mean about the high walkway. It must be more daunting for a tall grey to tackle as opposed to a stockier, collie type breed. But Murph's a real star - he managed fine.

Looking forward to hearing more about it next week - and let's hope the scary green tunnel monster isn't quite so scary as first time around.

Have to laugh ....

Fiona's comment on the 2nd of the A frame piccies...

"And over again, just because he could!"

should conclude..."And just because the helper lady has hot-dogs..."

Hi guys, Murphy here!!

Ive only just dried out! Cant believe mum made me go to the jump place in the rain! It was great fun tho. My new pals were all there as well & they didnt seem to bother about the wet so neither did I (mum put my cozy jacket on when we were waiting our turn which I liked).

I could barely contain my excitement today tho coz we were doing those courses again. My favourite 1st! - that high dog walk thing. Not slippy at all suprisingly so I jumped the jump & zoomed up & over to find the hot dog at the other side...missed both the yellow touch boards tho in my excitment so mum said I would have been eliminated in competitions...hope that doesnt involve being fed to the monster...?!! then I followed mum & did the next 4 jumps really well - so well that I thought Id quickly wizz over the dog walk again which made everyone laugh. Im sooo clever....

I then got to do that course backwards...bit confused as I cant reverse very well unless Im fed something tasty in mums kitchen then I back out real fast so she cant take it back of me But no silly me...we had to go the other way around the course. Jumped the 4 easily but missed the dog walk I was going so fast so tried my hardest to hop on half way up the ramp. Mum soon corrected me & I ran down the other side to get my hot dog & a big cuddle. How easy is this!! hot dogs & cuddles if Im a good boy!

I then had to do those poles sticking out the ground - weavy things mum calls them. Cripes - only done them once & I got all dizzy. Mum didnt even have to hang onto my collar tho. I concentrated REAL hard on the hot dog piece in her hand & didnt take my eyes off it & before I could lick my lips we had weaved in & out of all of them!! Mum squeezed me sooo hard at the end & gave me 3 bits of hot dogs!! Im soooo doing them weavies again!!

We then all stood & had a laugh as there was another GH there who has escaped her mum & was racing around the field with the hairy lurcher!! Took a while to catch them *lol*
Mum said I was awfy good today as I hadnt done a lap of honour today....cant possibly think what she is talking about!

Once things had settled we went onto the A frame. I soo have this sussed. The quicker you jump the jump & get up & over the frame, the quicker you get the hot dog at the other side! Over I went, scoffed my treat & then ran back up to the top of the frame & down again to Laura the trainer to see if she would give me another one but she just laughed at me & gave me a big head rub. Oucht well. Worth a try.

I was then made to try the see-saw....looked easy, just like the dog walk so up the ramp I went but WOOOOAAAHHH - got half way the whole thing started to tip...*YIKES* my legs went all jelly like & I jumped off sideways. What were they doing to me!! Mum made me start all over but she held on tight to me & had a hot dog inches from my nose...well I suppose....wooo...aaaaahh...over...eeeekkk..down. Phew!! Made it. Bit blinkin scary tho!!

All the humans clapped & whooped tho so I jumped up on them all to celebrate!! I must be such a good boy!!

Best of all, I heard the boss lady say to mum that she wouldnt make me do it tunnel monster today as it was a bit wet! *yeah wet behind the ears!! lol* (big raspberry noise:)

Then we went & had fun doing more rows of jumps real fast - I love this bit!! zzzooooooommmm....Think I like this place. Will def let mum bring me next week!

Night all as Im awfy awfy tired now...if I get into mums bed now then I can preetend to be fast asleep by the time she goes to bed so she has to squeeze onto the edge of it. teehee

Hi Murph

Brilliant! You're such a clever boy, doing the high walk, zooming over all the jumps and having a go at the see-saw! You deserve all the hot dogs you get for all the exciting things you're doing at agility. You'll soon be tackling even the tunnel monster (he's really just a big softie waiting for you to run right through him - all mouth and no bite!).

Hope you left roughly six inches from the edge of the bed for your Mum to get some kip!

"monster nearly got me last night....mum tried feeding it 1st by throwing hot dogs into its mouth....if she thinks Im stupid enough to be THAT desperate for hot dogs by becoming a dead dog then she can think again....my heart wasnt quite in the fun jumps and weavy poles after that.....

*sniff* got all wobbly legs on the see-saw again....trainer lady said shell try me with the collapsable monster next week.....no danger Im going....Ill hide somewhere real clever. Honestly. Im NOT going!! She cant make me.... - can she??"

Awww, wee Murphy - you know that your mum won't let anything bad happen to you, ever, ever, ever! So you don't need to worry that the monster is going to eat you. The trainer lady can't make you do anything that you don't want to. But, you know, if you gave it a go it might be fun. Your mum is there to look after you, and you've been the star of the class so far. Just you show them how it's done!
