FAST LEARNER
Permalink Closed

Hi Folks, been a while since I had to put out an urgent foster appeal which I reckon is a good thing however good things have to come to an end eventually..

In the last 3 days GAL have had to remove 3 Greyhounds from the SSPCA welfare centre in Hamilton, they had all served well over their alloted time there and as the kennels were expecting a lot of new arrivals we had to move them. This has put enormous strain on our resources and kennel space but I'm happy to say all 3 dogs are now accomodated thanks to our regular foster homes bearing the brunt by taking in additional dogs over and above what they normally handle.

This appeal is for a 4th dog still with the SSPCA, given the dogs age the SSPCA have decided not to keep her over and above her alloted 7 days, those 7 days are complete tomorrow (Saturday 14th) and we urgently need to find a foster home for her. At this stage even if we can find a temporary home for her till the end of May it'll give her a repreive and time for GAL to find somewhere more permanent.

The dog doesn't have a name so she's currently going by her racing name of 'FAST LEARNER'. She's a 10 and a half year old Brindle Greyhound Bitch. I have no other information on her so I have to be totally honest here and say I don't know if she's cat / dog OR child safe. All I know is she was found as a stray and she's in a bit of a state, specific concern is her mouth full of rotten teeth.

If you can help in any way please email me on david@gal.org.uk or call me on 0870 888 7277

thanks again

Dave

Folks, just to say a HUGE thank you to Susan Gardiner and Julie Honeyman who
both offered to take 'Fast Learner' on a temporary foster and an equally HUGE
thanks to Jean & Gerry Gibson who also offered.

Jean & Gerry's home just pipped Susan & Julie as being the most
suitable for her and I'm happy to say we liberated 'Fast Learner' from the SSPCA
early this afternoon, she's now resting peacefully in Jean & Gerry's
home with their other GAL rescue hounds Cookie & Cleo.

Jean & Gerry have promised to think up a suitable name for her in the
next few days!

Finally 'Fast Learner' dropped by Langbank today on her trip home with Jean
and I took these snaps of her, her teeth are quite rotten and she's a bit
wobbly on her back legs but otherwise she was in pretty good condition!

Dave - she's lovely and some TLC will work wonders on her. Good luck to her and her foster Mum and Dad  - she'll do well in her new foster home. We just need to find out what her name will be!

Hi Fast Learner,

You deserve a wonderful retirement - the last week or so have been traumatic for you. But you are in good hands now! Relax and enjoy things!

Glad to have helped you a wee bit on your way!

Hi all!

Just to let you know, Fast Learner got home safely with us this afternoon - not a squeak out of her in the car, she just lay there good as gold!

She's had 2 dinners, and had a good shot at pinching the cheese and biscuits we were having after our dinner (she was fair impressed at the thought of the barbecue as well!!), so no problems with her appetite then.   She's now spread out on a duvet on the living room floor sound asleep.   She's still a bit bewildered, obviously, but doesn't seem too anxious or anything, so we'll give her a couple of days to settle down then take her to the vet to see about her teeth (that'll be nice for the vet!!!!).

Will keep you posted re her progress!

Haven't decided on a name yet - it'll probably be obvious tomorrow!   Will let you know!

Cheers

Jean

Hey,

Great news! She has had quite a few difficult days! I'm sure she is settling in  in your house - oh the luxury after her kennel stuff - her apptite seems fine. Once her teeth are sorted she will improve tremendously.

She is a great older babe!  Watch out for  the older  ones - they like to be in charge - whatever the younger ones liketo think

Hi Jean

Great news - I'm delighted that Fast Learner is settling in with you. She'll progress even more once her teeth are fixed. It sounds as if she's thoroughly enjoying the food she wouldn't get in the kennels. What do Cookie and Cleo think of their new pal?

Hi all!

Quick update on Fast Learner.

We have named her (for now at least) as (ahem, wait for it!) Myrtle, cos she moans a lot (for those who don't know, Moaning Myrtle is a ghost in Harry Potter).   Sorry about that!   She isn't so much moaning as nagging - very vocal, likes to demand attention!

I took her to the vet today.   She's booked in to have her teeth done a week on Thursday.   Unfortunately she's had to have antibiotics cos she's either got an infection due to her rotten teeth or a touch of kennel cough.   Whatever, she has a bit of a cough and a horrid runny nose - every time she gets up it drips on to the carpet!   Just as well I'm not houseproud!

Cookie, Cleo and Scooby are taking it all very well, all things considered!   As is the cat!   Fortunately, Myrtie doesn't see too well, so the cat's quite safe!   The goldfish doesn't seem to have noticed that anything's amiss so far, so that's something!

She's a lovely old girl (if a bit eccentric, but then so's the rest of this family!), and, hopefully, getting her teeth done, plus the magnetic collar I'm ordering for her, will do her wonders.   We feel very privileged to be allowed to look after her!

Will keep you updated!

Cheers,

Jean

Hi all!!!

My mum doesn't know I'm typing this so I'll make it quick.

Myrtle is a really lovely dog that I hope we will get to keep. She has a good nature(and for a stray her coats in good condition). It is a privilege to have such a wonderful dog.

  Grant(jeans son)

PS. Mum had to look up privilege in the dictionary.

I think Myrtle is a great name.  I used to have a chinchilla called Myrtle!  She sounds absolutely gorgeous and she has certainly landed on her feet coming to live with you all.

When I adopted Suzie - who will be 10 in August - she had to have antibiotics because her gums were so inflamed and bleeding.  They improved dramatically and she is having her teeth done when she gets her neutering op.

Looking forward to hearing more about her progress.

Hi Jean and Grant

I think Myrtle is a lovely name too! Well, we've already got a Harry - we may yet see a Hagrid or a Dumbledore on GAL's website!

Hope everything goes well for Myrtle a week on Thursday at the vet's. I'm so glad that Myrtle is settling in with you and I hope to meet you all at one of GAL's events.

Grant,
So glad to hear you are enjoying having Myrtle staying at your home (and I hope your wish to keep her comes true!) She has a nice happy face on her photo and I bet she's very, very happy staying with you and your family.

P.S. I like her new name.

Hi all!

Quick update re Myrtle.

She's rapidly taking over the household.   She's lovely, a real character.   Wows everyone she meets.

She had her teeth done yesterday (I know it was supposed to be a week on Thursday but the best laid plans....).   After giving us heart failure (almost) last night when she got a really bad bleed while she was still too dopey to do anything about it, she got up this morning right as rain - "What's up with you lot.   I want out.   Give me my breakfast!"   She has 15 sparkling choppers and lots of spaces!

She's an even bigger thief than Cookie (if that's possible), and ran off with a frozen loaf the other day (Cookie waits til they're defrosted!).   I got it back and we had it toasted (well, given the state of her mouth at the time we weren't having it fresh!)

So all is well here!

Will post you with more updates soon!

Cheers

Jean

Hi Jean

Myrtle has settled very quickly with you and she's letting her true nature out now. I laughed at her pinching the frozen loaf! But it's great she's had her teeth fixed and she'll be really happy now that she won't be troubled with them. Give her a big hug from me!

That's wonderful news! Congratulations to Myrtle and all the family. I'm so glad that everything has worked out for you, Grant. Your wish has come true and Myrtle has landed on all four paws! She looks so well in her photo taken yesterday at the Hot Dog Show. Her coat is gleaming and she has a happy smile. Looking forward to hearing more about her thieving!

Christine

What can I say - always was a soft touch!!!!!

She's a lovely old girl though - despite her thieving ways!!!!    Caught her sauntering out the kitchen with a box of eggs (a dozen, no less) the other day, discovered she's the only one who's figured out how to open the cupboard door where the bin is, bought some tomatoes to make soup - she had the tomatoes we had no soup!   We had friends in last night, supper time sandwiches...guess where they went!

Just as well she's pretty!

As I type this, she's eyeing up the "chips and dips" that Gerry's just put out for supper.    We're going to have to do away with the coffee table, put in a bar and sit on bar stools - hopefully that'll be high enough (probably not!).   It's Gerry ordering a pint every time he sits down that worries me!

We got her a magnetic collar, and I got out the magnetic bed that our last old dog used, so hopefully that'll keep her supple - we have been tempted to turn the magnets the wrong way and see how far she flies.......!!!!!!!   Naw, not really!

Anyway, will speak to you soon!

Cheers!

Jean

PS re the name, it's going to get very complicated, isn't it?   Perhaps I should just call myself thingie!!!!

PPS Grant's chuffed to bits - only problem is, Myrti doesn't like his bagpipes, so he's having to practice in his room!

Hi Myrtle,

Your looking very good in your photograph.  Great to see that you are making sure that we in GAL ensure that all the older hounds are  rescued and allowed to live out their lives in comfort. You older boys and girls still have plenty of life in you and are full of wisdom   - how to open doors, bins, food containers etc -  You can show all those younger pups how to do things

It was a close thing for you - but hey you enjoy your wonderful retirement.

Charles
