'Sad' Sam & Gala came into GAL's care in May 2003, Sam was a big lurcher boy and Gala a German Shepherd cross. At that time they were both aged 12 years old and had lived together for over 10 of those years. Their owner died suddenly and the family approached GAL to try to rehome Sam, when we heard the story and how the dogs had been together for such a long time we decided to take both dogs into our care.
Sam & Gala went to stay with Eddie and Rachel at the GAL kennels in Langbank, as they were a pair of oldies they were given a comfy spot in the living room to call their own, Sam was nicknamed 'Sad' Sam, anyone who'd looked into those big eyes would have know why.
At the time Sam and Gala were available for adoption however we always knew it would be an uphill struggle to find a permanent home for this pair of golden oldies. In December 2003 Eddie and Rachel made the decision to adopt the pair permanently.
Sam and Gala were really inseparable, poor Sam was like Gala's hen pecked husband constantly being bullied by her, they both had big hearts and to see them running around playing like a pair of dafties you'd never have guessed their age. Of course they were really spoiled by Eddie and Rachel, they both deserved it, Sam particularly liked the occasional curry and wouldn't leave Eddie alone if there was a chance of a quick drink from his can of lager.
In the last fortnight there was a sudden deterioration in Sam's health and whilst out playing with Gala last night he collapsed. Rachel called the emergency vet who gave him antibiotics and a little 'pick me up', his condition did improve slightly and he did manage to get up and go outside for one last walk with Gala. Sadly he collapsed again shortly afterwards and Rachel and Eddie took the painful decision to have him put to sleep to stop him from suffering anymore.
All our thoughts are with Eddie and Rachel today but especially with Gala who's soulmate is now gone to rainbow bridge.
Dave - what a shame! I remember meeting Sam and Gala at our very first GALa Event. We were about to be home checked and Vegas was waiting in the wings!
I saw them together again at Rachel and Eddie's at the last event there. Please tell Rachel and Eddie that I'm thinking of them and Gala who must be missing her pal.
I always wondered what had happened to these dogs. Delighted that Sam had a lovely home for his twilight years....thinking of his pal and his kind adopters now.
So sorry to hear about 'Sad' Sam. Allan & I walked Sam and Gala at the GALa day and our hearts were torn in two by the pair of them and their obvious affection for each other.
We were really glad when we heard that they had found their home together with you and I know that Sam will have been very happy in his final months (especially if he could have a curry & lager) - it's all we can hope for when we take on an old dog.
