Pearly has a dicky tummy - starve her or not?
Permalink Closed

Pearly has a dicky tummy at the moment, which she's had since yesterday morning. She refused her breakfast yesterday and so we've given her chicken and rice since then. Though at dinner time today she had a bit of her usual kibble thrown in to try to solidify things, plus some natural yoghurt to help settle her tum. She's scoffed everything gladly, so she's feeling better in that sense. But she's still very, very skittery. Though thankfully she's not been sick.

We're wondering whether we should starve her for a day to rest her tummy? She's usually pretty self-policing, in that if she feels yuk she won't eat at all. I've heard differing opinions on the starve/don't starve theories, so I'm confused.

What do you all do when your doglets have a dodgy tum? Should we keep feeding her or give her system a day of rest?

Fiona

Hi Fiona, I'd give her a wee bit in the morning see how she is and if she's still a bit loose then starve her for 24 hours...usually if one of ours is a bit sick or loose they get starved for 24 hours right away but if Pearly is looking better and managed the rice tonight she's prolly on the mend already!

Thanks, Dave. We gave her a small bit of breakfast, which she polished off like a shot. She's still loose as loose can be so we'll rest her tum for 24 hours, see how she goes. She didn't wake us up in the night last night to go out for the loo, so hopefully she is on the turn and feeling a bitty better.

Can I ask a daft question. Has pearly been wormed recently? Blondie had a bit of an upset tum and after worming has been great. Much easier with the poo bags I might add. Just a thought.

Wilma has a very sensitive tummy and we usually only give her scrambled egg in the morning and plain white rice at night when she has the same problem!  We usually keep this going for a 2-3 days - till the runs stop - and then gradually introduce her normal biscuits in over the next couple of days.  Seems to work for her (and saves a trip to the vet for an injection!!)  We are currently using the same trick with Barney (although he did need the injection and antibiotics!!) and hope to see his pooh getting back to normal in the next day or two!

Well, the threat of starvation clearly has done the trick! Pearly produced something very satisfying firm on our walk this evening - she was a bit puzzled by our jubilations! Looks like she's well on the road to recovery.

Thanks for all the good thoughts.

Fiona

ps: do you ever hear yourself saying things that you never, ever thought you would say.....?

pps: Audrey - funnily enough, she's due to be wormed next weekend, but I think we'll pull it forward and do her tomorrow.

hope everything works out ok for you and poor Pearly.

are dicky tummys a greyhound thing? I've had Blondie to the vet vomiting blood (cream carpet). Then within a week she had the skits this time hornby railway set and cream carpet. I'm terrified to give her anything strange to eat (chicken curry) in case she lets rip again. But she does seem to suffer from grumbly tums quite often and can clear a room in seconds.
