Under this new bill Greyhounds will not be covered the same as "ordinary" family pets, please write to your MP's and feel free to cross post all you like.
Im raging about this!! Wonder what size of backhander the bl@@dy racing industry gave to get that glossed over!!
Im not too sure about all the politics of the racing world so wouldnt be able to word a literate/intelligent enough letter to send off to MPs - would someone be willing to do one that folk can email out to others/send off?? (not under the guise of GAL - just as outraged GH owners)

Scottish animals will be covered by the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland ) Bill. The Consultation draft can be seen at www.scottish.gov.uk Type in Animal Welfare in search box.
Very Important that you write to your MSP's now
So as well as writing to our MP's regarding the English Bill we in Scotland need to write to our MSP's. We could perhaps get the Scottish Bill changed if enough of us write in - asking that greyhounds are fully coverd and the Racing Industry is not allowed to self regulate greyhound welfare, kennels etc.
I'm just copying stuff to send off to my MSP re Scottish Darft Legislation and also to my MP re English Draft Legislation.
Please all GAL ppl write to your MSP and MP'S - greyhounds deserve to come uder same rules as other dogs - the British Greyhound Board should not have a ' get out' and have a self regulating role under new legisaltion. (power of money) But ppl power can change things
Write to your MSP's and MP's now - Please note Draft Legislation is Scottish and English
Sottish Political reps tend very receptive - so lets show Scotland can give the lead in Geyhound Protection Legislation - but dont' forget you can still influence your MPs in London re English Legislation
just going to print out quite a few copies of the letter for friends and relatives to sign and send as well as send on the link. Lets keep telling people.
I have a reply from my MP regarding the English - Animal Welfare Bill - She advises
' the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs has established a working group to examine the issue of greyhound welfare. This working group has been asked to offer advice to ministers and officials in drafting proposals to improve greyhound welfare and sugguest areas which could be covered by regulations and a code of practice. The working group includes representattives of welfare organisations, the racing industry and develoved administrations. It is governmnet policy to defer introducing regulations over greyhounds pending the outcome of the work being done within the industry to raise working standards.'
She also confirms that provisions for the welfare of greyhounds in Scaotland are made in the Animal Helathand Welfare (Scotland) Bill which is currently being discussed by the Scottish parliamnet.
So keep writing to your MPs and MSPs regarding greyhound welfare - and the urgent need to speed up progres. The Racing Indistry seem to have convinced the governmnet that they be allowed to get their 'house in order' prior to reulation.
I think we have a better chance of influencing things in Scotland AS MSPs hopefully will be more open to persuation on welfare issues - eg Hunting Legislation in advance of England etc
Hi Folks, some good news on this one! Just to recap, there's currently 2 new Animal Welfare Bills on the go, one for England and one for Scotland, the English version of the Bill has been amended to NOT include Greyounds in it. The Scottish BIll was issued in 'draft' format a few months ago and comments were asked for, GAL received a copy of this draft bill and we sent back our comments specifically in regard to gaining assurance that Greyhounds WOULD be covered in the Scottish version of the Bill.
I'm happy to report then that we've now received a paper detailing the comments received from the draft copy of the Scottish Bill with answers to all those comments from the Scottish Executive. Happily they have specifically mentioned in their response that Greyhounds WILL be covered by the new legislation being introduce in Scotland...
