Eilidh's not well today after a lovely time in the park yesterday doing what groos do best - running about.

When I got up this morning, she didn't want out and I couldn't tempt her with a treat (not like Eilidh I thought to myself.)  When we got to the park, she made a mad dash to be sick and all that came out was thick, white foam, which she couldn't clear properly and loads and loads and loads of it!  My, was she looking grim.

Left her in the care of her daddy and went off (late) to work.  When I came home at lunch, more of the same and one very ill looking wee mite underneath my desk....cue vets.

My lovely vet let me bring her in even though he was booked up.  Turns out that she has a temp of 103 and isn't too good.  He suspects that all her dashing around yesterday has caused a big build up of lactic acid, which apparently some doggies can't clear very well.  If too much builds up then it can lead to kidney and liver damage!

Anyway off we toddled after a big injection, a course of antibiotics and a nice drop of Mallox in case she keeps being sick.  If this is the case, then she goes straight back in the morning for blood tests, but she seems ok just now and has kept down her scrambled eggs.

There are other avenues to explore when she recovers, but her immediate danger seems to be from lactic acid so we have to treat her for this first.

I just wondered how common a problem this was in groos - surely it can't be that bad, otherwise there'd be an awful lot of sick doggies after races.  Has anyone else heard of this cos it's a new one on me?  Can it happen to all groos or just some?

Carol

Eilidh got up this morning fine and dandy with a big waggy tail for mum.

Iain spoke to the vet this morning and from what I can gather from the note he left me, the vet is confident that she will be fine and have no further problems.  He says that problems with lactic acid are very uncommon and that we just have to keep an eye on her diet now as this could be a trigger.

I enjoyed my p and q yesterday, but I am very glad she is back to menace mode today!

Glad to hear Eilidh is back to herself today. You must have been very worried about her..it's just like having a sick kid!! It's funny how you wish for a bit of p and q and then when you get it you really don't want it after all!!

Big hugs to Eilidh from Gambol Keera and Jamie

Hi Carol

So glad Eilidh is back to her usual sunny self and that the vet thinks she won't suffer from lactic acid again. It must be a great relief for you because when they're off colour, they can't tell you what's wrong. Give a big hug from me to Eilidh and to Luca and Whistler too!

Shirley, you're right - whenever there's perfect peace in our house, there's often something wrong!

Very interesting, Bovril has been off his food for a couple of days recently ,eating loads of grass including 11o' clock last night and trying to be sick could it be the heat and humidity causing this?.He is drinking enough so not to worried about dehydration ,anyway he was looking better this am and wanting fed as soon as I got up .

He did this a few weeks ago when the weather was hot so maybe thats how it affects him, but  it is worrying all the same.

Ive been researching lactic acid buildup to no avail Im afraid Carol - most places just tell you how to treat it & not why it occurs...there are a few theories tho - not having a good enough warm up - being exercised for too long (espech on hot days as dehydration will vastly increase muscle tiredness & therefore LA buildup), too high a carbohydrate conc in diet etc etc

It is actually very common in racing Greyhounds (& other sports dogs eg.dog sledge teams etc) but suprise, suprise trainers inject their racers with a substance that acts as a muscle buffer & therefore neutralises the lactic acid & lets the dog perform for longer/give more stamina.....

always a bleedin drug for everything eh!! grrr

Glad the wee scone is feeling better tho - muscle cramps are horrible things!!
