Lucky escape

When we were out this morning, Eilidh, Luca, Whistler and I were walking quite happily, when we passed by a walled garden on the main road.  As we passed by the entrance (which has no gates) we saw a rotweiler cross, so bagan to speed up, as you do.

This thing took one look at us and charged right into the middle of the dogs growling and snarling.  The boys, being boys got their growls on and tried to defend little Eilidh. However, she got such a fright that she was jumping about like a loony, twisting and turning.  She managed to get out of her collar and ran straight out onto the road as Whistler saw the dog back off into its garden.

Luckily a guy in a council van saw what was happening and blocked the road as I tried to call Eilidh back. She would come forward slightly but was so frightened that whenever she saw the dog that had attacked them she would back off again into the road.

I looked at the guy who owned the dog, who by he way had been standing in his garden smoking a cigar and watching this happening, and said not so politely that the least he could do was hold the two boys while I went to get Eilidh.  Very graciously he agreed.

Eilidh safely returned, I turned my attention to the dog's owner and suggested that he might like to keep his dog under control.  He told me it wasn't his fault and that I shouldn't have a dog that slipped it's collar.  Whilst I do agree that she shouldn't have slipped her collar, it did take her a lot of effort to do it and she wouldn't have done it in the first place if his dog hadn't attacked them.

As you can imagine, my naughty side came out and lets say that the guy was left in no doubt of what I thought of himbut when I got home I was so upset that I just howled.

I did think about contacting the police but then Eilidh could've caused an accident so I would probably only land myself in the proverbial.

So I have learned two things from this...

1. Must get Eilidh a new collar.

2. Even if your dogs are attacked by someone elses, expect to get the blame!

Carol

You did have a very lucky escape.

I really CAN'T BELIEVE there are SO Many ignorant dog owners who lack so much common sense. WHAT AN IDIOT !

You cannot be held responsible for your dog slipping its collar under those circumstances as you didn't intentionally take her collar off however, what IF that dog had attacked YOU instead of your pooches ? I would make enquiries with the police anyway - if you call the station number and speak to someone there rather than the emergency number you should be given some good advice.

Glad everything turned out ok for all of you.

Good job there was someone else there sensible enough to help you out.

Cheers

You poor things. Some people are just stupid and irresponsible. What good boys for trying to protect poor little Eilidh, she must have been petrified.

Try not to blame yourself too much about her slipping her collar. You can't predict theese things.

Give all your hounds a cuddle from me and make sure you have something nice chillied in the fridge for later.

Poor Carol,

You must have got a terrible fright. One of your dogs running loose on a main road would have been a nightmare for you. (It is my worst nightmare).  But you coped with the situation, you've got Eilidh back and you're all safe at home now and that's what matters.

In all my years owning and training dogs I have NEVER been able to understand why an owner, who knows their dog will fight, allows it to get into that situation, and even find it entertaining. Their sanity is questionable!  Most dogs will guard their territory but a simple set of garden gates would have avoided what could have been a tradgedy.

Carol, pour yourself a stiff dram, you deserve it!

Poor you Carol - that was a horrible experience.  Thank goodness you are all safe and sound now.

I guess you will probably be avoiding that route when you walk now.

Carol - what a horrible thing to happen! I'm delighted you're all safe and sound now, but it must have been awful at the time - you'd be so frightened for Eilidh and so angry at the ignoramus! What a prat - I'll never understand people who stand by while their dog creates havoc for other people and their dogs. How marvellous that your two boys protected Eilidh from the rotty X. She must have been terrified and I hope it hasn't affected her confidence as she's coming on so well.

Big hugs all round for Luca, Whistler and Eilidh and a stiff wee dram of whatever you fancy to you. Oh - and a plague of nasty boils to the eejit with no gate and no brain! A lucky escape it definitely was! Hope everything's OK now.

what an awful ordeal for you and the baby girl.  glad everything is ok now but i can understand you having a good old howl - open that bottle you've been saving for a special occasion !!

the guy with the rotty will have something bad happen to him now - what goes around, comes around - i truly believe in natural justice.  just cos the guy is an ignoramus doesn't protect him from his eventual fate !!!

i would definitely get some advice from the police - after all, nothing came of eilidh's collar-slipping but......next time...... that rotty could destroy something just as precious.

hugs and kisses to your babes from dave & daisy and best wishes from me (teresa) and neil xx

Gawd, thank goodness for the council chap blocking the road with his van - I dread to think where the wee lass might have ended up if she'd taken off in full flight. Good on you for telling the rottie's owner what you thought of him. I'm not surprised that the whole incident upset you so much - the adrenaline must have been pumping whilst it happened, then the subsequent slump must have left you completely fraught.

Well done on the two boys sticking up for their wee princess. I hope both you and Eilidh are fully recovered from your horrible fright.

Hugs from us lot.

Plus - the police might be able to have a word with the owner and say they have had a complaint.  That might prompt him to get a gate which would also prevent the rotty from meeting a horrible fate if he misbehaves in the future.

GAL sells nice saluki style slip collars which are nice but we've gone for harnesses in the end. Find them easier to control a dog and I can't see our ones ever getting loose from one.

Glad things turned out okay. Let me know the address of the Rottie and we'lll send Big 'Aarry round!
