I hope you all enjoyed hearing how Dave, sorry Ivor, got on during his training class with Viv, I know I did. Last night Mac took me to my 1st training class beginner obviously! There are only 4 of us in the class, Coco and Vinnie (wellknown GAL dogs), and another lurcher dog from Bothwell - sorry with all the excitement I missed his name!
Mac looked the part, wearing his new 'zebra' collar and lead (big dogs' blouse), and was wagging his tail and generally taking a great interest in everything going on. (I had asked him to pay attention in case I missed anything!) Viv decided to demonstrate the clicker training on Mac, but guess what, Mac lost interest after a couple of bits of gammon and decided that it would be better fun to go and check out the competition. Apart from his usual dinners of Arden Grange, Mac gets treats of Sirloin Steak, Steak Sausage etc, so those treats will have to be cut down, except for training purposes, otherwise we will stay in the beginners class for the next few of years.
All in all Mac enjoyed his 1st class - except the bit about cutting out his treats, except for training! I learned something too, don't over feed Mac before training classes!!
Only 3 days since the training class with Viv but Mac is enjoying the benefits already, and so am I!!
He was out in the garden today and would not come in when I called him...selective hearing. I tried opening the fridge and taking out some gammon...nope, Mac still couldn't hear, so as a last ditched attempt I picked up the clicker!
All of a sudden he could hear again and my goodness can Mac run!!! 100mph into the kitchen for his treat! He slid sideways from the back door right up to the fridge.
I could hardly give him his treat for laughing. Guess something is working!
LOL! Sounds as if Mac's clicker training is working really well. I can just see him skiting sideways up to the fridge (as if he put on his brakes too late!) But how like a man he is - only hearing what he wants to hear!!
2nd night at training and Mac and I had another v. enjoyable night, and it was so good to see my old buddie Bert turn up to start his Mums' training!!. Thats four GAL dogs Mac, Coco, Vinnie, Bert, and the lovely Flynn from Bothwell kennels, its like a GAL reunion. Guess what, with the except of coco they are all black!
I was well behaved this week, and took Viv's advice about not feeding Mac before we went to the class and I think he did a lot better this week.
I have been given my homework for this week..... and looking forward to starting that tomorrow.....as its 'treat' related training, I honestly think I heard Mac, saying, 'bring it on.......' Mac is loving it and he would recommend this training to any dog contemplating training their owner.
Not to cause any confusion, my avatar is of my first beloved G.H. Kaz, Mac's colouring and character is the complete opposite in every respect from Kaz, but Mac is loved just as much.
It's great that Mac is enjoying training you so much! Plus the fact that he gets lots of treats for getting you to do what he wants. He's going to have lots of fun doing his homework.
Sounds asthough both you and Mac are having great fun at the training classes.
Wonderful to hear that both Bert and Vinnie are at the training classes. Nice to know they have got caring forever homes after spending so long in kennels
3rd week gone already, the classes are so enjoyable the time passes too quickly.
Mac did great this week.........his Mum didn't!!
We didn't have any problems with the touch test, Mac's favourite game, but the 'stay' was something else. For some reason Mac doesn't like this one..at the moment!! And......Viv identified straight away that I have been spoiling Mac too much, I've turned him into a mummy's boy, who has managed to train me!
Well, we can't have that, I will need to toughen up, so new regime in this household from now on. I'm going to be the boss this week not Mac....! Right Mac....'get off my bed for a start'!!
He can still sleep on your bed, if that's what you want and you both enjoy it. Ask me to give you some printed matter next week. It explains how to 'be the boss' without being bossy, if you know what I mean. In fact the whole class can have a copy, it's a great programme .
Poor Mac is likely to put himself to bed with a damp towel on his forehead if you do get tough with him. Ahh bless.
Don't get disheartened, some of our best advanced dogs had a wee problem with the 'dreaded stay', but now, I doubt a hopping bunnie would make them break their stay....................all right that may be a slight exageration, but they are good!
Oh no Viv, I don't think your an ogre and didn't mean imply that, quite the contrary. In fact your ears should have been burning tonight, I'm telling everyone about how good Mac is doing at the class! I made a rod for my own back previously, by being too lenient with Kaz, but he was old.........(yes, Dawn another excuse!), and I def don't want to go down that road with Mac. But I DO need to be told and very much appreciate all the advice I can get.
I started his new regime today..no more Mr Nice Guy, but......hey guess what, you won't be surprised to hear he didn't want to come off the bed, and he did look so comfy!!!
We will keep trying, its early days, and like you say, he will get the hang of it. I couldn't believe how excited Mac got when he realised where he was on Thursday night, I bet he would have 'stayed' on at the class, given half the chance!
Don't get disheartened. Fiddie wouldn't do the stay at all. After 7 of the 8 classes he still refused to stay. I phoned Viv on the Monday night and she suggested taking him back to the beginning and starting all over again. 48 hours later he would stay, recall, touch and finish. Just two or three minutes at a time but frequently and followed with a lot of fuss and playing with his favourite toy.
Needless to say he does whatever he wants now.......
Week 4, and I cannot believe we are half way through the training course already.
Mac loves the 'touch' game so much, I knew that wouldn't be a problem for him, and like before, he manged to do this no problem. But then we did the dreaded 'stay'..... guess what, Mac managed to do his 'stay' first time, much to his Mums' delight. The second time we tried it, you would have thought I had superglued his bottom to the corner and he would have 'stayed' there quite happily all night!!
Viv showed us a new game to play and this is definately going to be one of Mac's favourite games. We played it in the garden this afternoon and after a few hotdogs Mac looked so sad it was over and he was very reluctant to come back into the house. Given half the chance he would have me playing this all day!
Oh Mac Firstly, lets get his ears cleaned out to improve his hearing! He loves all the training and when he is at home he can hear the lid of the hotdog jar being opened from 10 miles away. He was showing off in the back garden the other day as my neighbour watched his 'training' and I was so proud of him, I thought that he would give the most obedient dog a run for his money. But alas, poor Mac doesn't like an audience of more than one and decides to shut down when the other guys are watching him in the training class.......making out that his Mum hasn't done any training from one week to the next. Don't you just love them!! But I know his game, he thinks that if he 'acts daft' in training, it guarantees' his training will be ongoing and he gets all the fun and the hotdogs. I haven't told him yet that his training will be ongoing even if he gets it right or not!! Ha ha Mac. xx
