OK folks, been mulling this idea around for a while now(!)...the idea is to write a book about Greyhounds (all proceeds going to GAL..etc...etc..) The idea of the book would be to collate stories of rescued and retired Greyhounds and Lurcher, this is where you guys come in! I was thinking that if we managed to get 20 chapters written then we'd have a pretty decent book, each chapter would be about a rescued Greyhound or Lurcher, you all have funny / happy / sad stories of your dogs past and present, if I was able to get 20 people to write a fairly decent sized chapter about one (or all) of their dogs then we might just have a pretty good book!!...
What do you all think!?!....If you are up for the challenge then get writing!...PLEASE don't worry, if you have a good story but think you can't write just get it down on paper, each story can be edited into a readable format!
OK, thats the 'challenge'..if you want any info please get in touch with me david@gal.org.uk
I hope you realise that you may have a lot of trouble organising the chapters, Dave.
Of course, the folk with the best-looking dogs will have to have the first chapters - just incase there are photos in there. You don't want potential buyers to be put off by an ugly dog.
So, my suggestion is that you plan for a very big first chapter because everyone knows that Whistler, Luca and Eilidh are by FAR the best-looking GAL dogs and I've got lots of funny stories about their antics.
With my dogs in there, it's sure to be a best seller.
Oh, and if you need an editor...I'll gladly volunteer! I will be very unbiased.
I think this is a brilliant idea! And I think Dawn's started it already with her mini series of Den and Kaz. So that's one chapter dealt with - 19 to go. Now I just need to elbow the guys in the house off the computer so that I can write one too!
i think thats a brill idea if it could go on general release it might raise awareness bout wot greyhounds r really like, destroy all those myths bout wot people think bout greys as ive heard a few untrue stories and put a few people right on things.taylor would make a gorgous front cover as shes looking great her coat has came thru all shiny and of course she is beautiful.
how i fervently wish that i'd got dave and daisy from GAL. there's no great story involved but they are THE most gorgeous-looking greys ever ever ever !! of course, Carol may not agree with me !!
I don't think anyone would mind that you didn't get your babes from GAL! The fact that you rescued them and they're great pets in a wonderful home is the main thing. So get your keyboard sharpened and ready to write!
Hi Tree (and everyone else) I guess the idea of the book is that it's about Greyhounds and Lurchers, it would be an added 'plus' if it were a GAL dog however it's not essential, I just need some nice stories!!
I was speaking to Rachel today. She is full of stories and I wondered if it might be an idea to get her to write a couple of chapters giving the other side of greyhound life i.e. their 'professional' life - the life that they have been rescued from.
It might strengthen the good stories for people who know little about greyhounds and why they need to be rescued.
in defence of the trainer that we got dave and daisy from.........their kennel life is pretty good - they are all in very good condition, seem happy with what they have (tho we humans would prefer they have more !) and are treated well by Kevin.
Kevin allows all his owners to visit, walk, treat and pet their dogs. In addition, he allows us (the adopters) to visit, walk and treat all the dogs in his care, racers or not. Many a time have i walked up and down the kennels to pet all the dogs in his care and there's not one of them that look badly off. Sadly, for me, Kevin has now retired from greyhound racing and his dogs are looked after by John Gammon whose attitude to owners (not dogs) is different. I shall be going to see them so will know if they need me !!!!!!
naturally, my own anthropomorphism (cough cough!) means that i see them all as needing to lay on my sofa but that really isn't a necessity, just a preference !!
go on, then, Dave. i doubt i'll use big words in that tho - i only get my dictionary-head on for business letters !! i had one published in the Racing Post and the following week, the journalist quoted my "brilliant letter" (just blowing my own trumpet !)
Hi Folks....3 chapters down 17 to go...come on all you budding writers, put pen to paper (or is that finger to keyboard)..don't be shy, rememeber just write down your story(s), if you think you are not up to scratch in the writing front ALL storys will be edited to booker prize level....go on you know you want to..
length of chapter not important - if they are too short I'll just be looking for MORE!!..content not important, important thing (obviously) is thats it's about your hound...few ideas - how you got her, what she does (funny and bad), a story written from her point of view, keep a diary for a few weeks about what you get up to and turn that into a story...etc.etc...
Well I've taking time out to have a go at least and have just sent our story to Dave.
Its two and a bit pages long so beat my essay writing skills at school by over 100% but that doesn't mean to say it gramatically correct or interesting for that matter.
No doubt Dave will read it and probably die with laughter with my effort or file it in the round filing bin !!
But heck I enjoyed doing it and it brought back some real good memories so the experience is worth it just for that whether or not Dave uses it.
Has your dog inspired you? Has your dog done something magical you just want to tell everyone? Has your dog got a story to tell? How has owning a Greyhound or Lurcher changed your life?....
