Does anyone have any ideas for stopping dogs from following you everywhere you go?!! Barney is a terrible follower. I've tried pulling a door closed behind me as I leave a room, but he just scratches at it until it opens. I'm wondering whether to try a baby gate - that way he can still see me but can't follow.
I realise that some people won't see a problem in a dog following you everywhere you go, but I can't even go to the toilet without him wandering along behind me, and frankly, it's starting to get on my nerves!!
Any help would be appreciated.

We use a dog gate £29.99 from Argos. Its somewhat higher than a baby stair gate and works wonders with greyhounds that consider jumping it.... Mine have not managed it or at least not even tried.
One of my foster dogs Maverick jumped a baby stair gate with ease but wouldn't even attempt to jump at the dog gate.
poor Barney he obviously loves you too much Sharon!!...I'd suggest you start taking a back seat with Barney, ignore him as much as you can, let Chas and the kids make a fuss over him but you ignore him, don't feed him or give him cuddles and if there's treats to be had make sure it's not you giving them....it's hard but he see's you as the best resource in the house so you've got to make him learn that you are not, only then will he let you pee in peace!!
Just to back up what Katrina and Dave say. We have the very same dog-gate and even Big Harry can't get over it - and he can jump over the sofa from a standing start!
We're having to be a little more hands-off with Harry at the moment because he's taken to following us around, mostly Steve. He's less independent than Pearly and we don't want him becoming anxious about us not being around for any reason.
I don't think it's as much as a problem when it's just me in the house, but then I think he knows where he stands with me - stare outs are usually short lived when he tries it on with me!! I work at home a lot at the moment, and you're lucky if he gets out of bed, or even looks up, when I "appear". Although in saying that, he's usually waiting for me when I come home and hears me coming before I even get in the house!!
He does tend to follow Sharon a lot, and even stands at the door staring/pleading when Sharon goes out of the living room.
Providing there are no other symptoms to his 'following' that you would class this as anything seperation related, you could have a dog here that has a brain the size of a planet and would welcome some mental stimulation.
Start to teach him some simple stuff like 'Go to your bed'.
You could also introduce a stuffed Kong and dried food dispensing toys like Molecuball or Buster Cube. These will keep him busy and teach him to enjoy a few moments on his own.
I don't know who's finding it hardest with me being a bit less hands-on with Barney! It's killing me, and I don't think he know's what's going on!! Bless him!! BUT, he does seem to be following me a little less than he was! Hoorah!
Viv, it's funny that you should say he might have a brain the size of a planet .... we'd made the assumption that he was the dumbest of the 3, but he sometimes seems to far outshine the other two! He's the only one who has worked out how to open doors and break into food bags!! As I say, his following me about has improved, but I might just look at buying some kongs for them all to keep them amused!
Thanks everyone for their help and advice!!
