Strange black spot
Permalink Closed

Bovril has a black spot on his back leg on the inner aspect ,it has a blackish area around it .

He has had one of these before on his tummy we left it alone and it finally fell off !.

Question is should we be worried about them or leave alone .

If in doubt - about absolutely anything - I would always ask the vet!

Interested to know what he/she says.

Does sound like it's a skin tag, especially with the last one falling off itself. But I would definitely agree with Lesley, if in doubt.....vet

When you find out please let us know.

I'd agree with Lesley and Siouxsie. I'd let the vet see it, at least. I would be interested inhearing what he or she has to say.

Dear All,

It sounds like a 'hot spot' these are common in greyhounds and are juicy, inflamed circular areas from 5mm to 20mm. They are usually on the ribcage, backline, inner thighs or above the tail. My book says that these are a small allergic reaction usually caused by biting insects,a rich diet, too much protein, or milk.Although personally I have never been able to pin point the cause.

My experience of them is that the diet may need altering, according to my vet but this has not worked in getting rid of them for my dogs.Well probably it would, if I stuck to their proper food and cut out all the other treats! They are harmless you can get anti-biotics for them but if left they do usually fall off as you say.The dogs do not appear to find them uncomfortable of sore.

Obviously as the others say, if you are worried get Bovril checked out at the vet but I am sure from your description this is what it is.Hope this stops you worrying too much until you can get him looked at - Em x

Hi, Denise - are you going to the GAL Christmas show for the greyhound day? If so, I'd love to meet up and see your bonnie boy again. Steve and I 'know' him from his days in the Fife kennels. He used to play in the paddock with Pearly (and run away from her when he'd had enough - that boy sure can shift! ).

Fiona

Edit: sorry, forgot to say, hope all goes well at the vet tomorrow.
