poor dave.  we were just getting ready for the evening walk tonite when i realised that dave was bleeding. as he stood there, the little puddle of blood under his rear right foot was growing slowly.  well, actually, it was growing quite quickly !!!

somewhere between the bottom of the stairs and his downstairs bed, the poor little soldier had torn out his claw. don't they bleed well !!!!!!! he didn't make a sound when it happened so i had no idea he was injured.

i phoned the vet for advice and she suggested i put a pressure bandage on it to stop the bleeding.  i'm ashamed to say that i don't have a first aid kit for us, let alone the dogs, so we improvised with cotton wool pads and strips of an old t-shirt !!  he kept this dressing on for a good half hour and he looked so funny - he was walking ok but lifting his foot so high off the ground it looked odd.  yep, we laughed at him !!

when he limped into the kitchen for his dinner, the bandage had fallen off and the bleeding seemed to have stopped.  it started again, but only slightly.  we had to put another bandage on his foot but i'm sure it's ok now.  we'll take it off before bedtime tho.

(revoltingly, we found the discarded claw in his bed)

Oh what a shame, Give Dave a cuddle from us.

Did you see the post a wee while back about first aid kits, Katrina (Missy) was going to be selling some, if my memory serves me right.

Oh poor Dave!! It sounds sore! I'm cringing at the thought of it. Give him a big hug from me and Vegas. I'm sure with all the TLC he'll get from you, Neil and Daisy, he'll be fine.

Is it his dew claw? If so, don't worry. Pearly has done this a couple of times. It happens so easily and quickly. Hope Dave feels better soon.

Fiona

ps: Arnica will help it to heal quickly. 2 pillules three times per day for a couple of days.

Gambol did this a few weeks ago and they certainly do bleed!! I took him to the vets and he got an antibiotic injection in case of infection and the claw has now grown back in nicely.

Hope Dave is feeling better and big hugs from all of us.

Poor Dave, sounds nasty - yes, it can be frightening to see quite a bit of blood.

We found recently when Tyler cut her foot that a human wound dressing was excellent - a pad is actually attached to the mesh bandage, so it was easy to put it on and it stayed on!

Poor Dave, I bet he's fine now though. Mine have done this a couple of times, Charlie the chewer had to wear a toddlers sock over his dressing for a few hours. I know what you mean about lifting their feet high, they look so funny.

Tiger hates my kitchen floor he walks in ok but always walks out backwards (the floor is a bit slippy) he looks daft. Why he can walk in but not out I havn't a clue !

Hope Dave is ok today Em,Tig and Chad XX

Poor Dave, I hope he is better now.  I never knew their claws could come out.  Ruby's are so long we call them her tallons.  We took her to the vets once to have them clipped but what a performance.  Sedation was used in the end.  It just didn't seem worth it for her so now they just seem to shed a bit every now & then.

I'm amazed that he didn't make a sound.  What a brave thing he must be.  Ruby yelps at the slightest little thing, and I mean slightest!

Give him a big fuss from us and we wish you both well.

Julie & Ruby xx

Cas has to get sedated every time to get her claws clipped she just get,s to distressed if you try to clip them. The last time she went she almost fainted at the site of the needle, such a wimp.
