Hi Folks, some breaking news 'just in' the SSPCA have today started taking in 28 greyhounds found in terrible conditions from a trainer near Glasgow. I've been told some of the dogs weight less than 10kgs.
The plans are for 6 dogs to go to the SSPCA shelter in Milton and the remaining 22 will be taken into Bothwell (for those that don't know GAL has a 'special' relationship with Bothwell where we help rehome any hounds they take in)
I'm afraid that's all the info I have at the mo but no doubt I'll post later when I have more info. we've urged the SSPCA to get a press release out about this as soon as they can to hopefully bring some publicity for the dogs.
Once again I'd ask for your help, PLEASE CONSIDER FOSTERING, if we can get some new foster homes and move some GAL dogs from our kennels this will give us the space to take the pressure of the SSPCA..
Dave - if you can get hold of whatever press release the SSPCA do. can you scan it & put it on here as a poster so I can print it off & post it at the vets Im at & anywhere else I can think....
Poor wee babies - doubt they would have made xmas if the SSPCA hadnt stepped it!
No-one can say they dont have room in their house for a wee 10kg pityful bag of skin & bone surely.....can you just imagine their wee faces light up when they see their dinner of turkey & stuffing on xmas day!! and their xmas stocking full of treats & toys !!

Ditto to Suzanne ,get out posters and we can post them in vets and pet shops, this is tragic and the sooner these dogs are found home,s the better. Oh if only I had room for more ,but with fours dogs and a land lord that will not allow our neighbours pet,s it is tragic. The only reason we are allowed dogs is because Derek works on the farm. Good Luck.

Please anyone that can help take one in. If I were only up there I would try to do my bit. Please help, as the others have said imagine the poor wee love's faces when they get sardines for their tea or a bit of Christmas lunch, please help if you can.
Dave, hopefully some people will come forward and not let the festive season take over. These dogs need in homes to get them sorted.
I have 10 in at the moment. You wouldnt know that there was that many in my home. To actually take an under nourished dog on and see what a difference can be made is a really good feeling.
i am sick with the though of these beautiful dogs being left to suffer. there is no excuses for this and i hope the owner gets his/hers punishement in one way or another! i can only imagen what these poor animals look like and are going through and my heart is going out to them. i just hope that each and every one can be saved and put into loving homes were they will never have to worry about anything again.
Dave I havnt slept all night thinking of those poor dogs. And trying to think how we can help its breaking my heart we cant foster at the moment (2 bedroom flat 3 kids and a grey) Let us know if there is anything else that those of us who cant foster can do. I'll def put up posters and hand out leaflets if that will help and as you know I'm keen to help as much as I can with fundraising.

Hi Folks, just a quick update, I can't really say much due to potential legal type stuff happening, suffice to say as of last night the SSPCA were in possession of only 2 of the dogs, there's 'issues' to be resolved on the other 26. GAL has volunteers down at Bothwell today so I'll hopefully get a better update later..
...all the dogs have now been signed over to the SSPCA and are currently in Bothwell, I have some pictures of them but won't post them due to ongoing 'actions'. All of the dogs are underweight and most have small injuries due to the conditions in their previous kennels. Most have problems with their teeth and skin and all have fleas and worms, other than that they seem a fairly happy bunch. All the dogs will be examined by a vet on Monday and a decision made on their individual futures after the check ups...I guess it has to be said we expect a few of them to be PTS, this is outwith our control sadly....more news when I have it...
Have been at Bothwell, Saturday and Sunday doing my GAL volunteer Saturday and an extra day trying to home as many of the greyhounds/ lurchers that were in SSPCA kennels already.
The GAL volunteer gets a greyhound / lurcher out of the kennels. Gets them kitted out in warm gear and a 'I Need a Home' coat and head out to meet the prospective dog owners. Fortunately the hounds really sell themselves once out of the kennels. Showing off by walking nicely, standing getting stroked by children. Eating treats or just chilling by the radiator in reception
I was able to see 12 of the greyhounds that have just arrived. It was heart breaking to see the look in their eyes. Quite anxious with the moves / upset in their lives. Most were a bit underweight but nothing that several weeks of good food would not fix. They will have been flea /worm treated and are due a full vet check and action taken to sort their teeth, skin wounds other ailments etc Fingers crossed for them
Good news is that two of the greyhounds that were in the SSPCA prior to the 28 found new homes yesterday. One went to his new home this morning the other due to go out on Wednesday. That frees up a bit of space.
However as you know this is not an easy time to home dogs! So SSPCA and GAL will have their work cut out over next few weeks.
Basically the market has been flooded with hounds.
So open your hearts and find space for one of these poor hounds. If you can't take full ownership of another hound why not foster a GAL dog. A new foster dog frees up urgently needed kennel space.
Perhaps someone should send pictures and a back ground story of these poor wee mites to the Scottish Executive just to remind them that cruelty still exists within the industry.
Have found this really upsetting and fustrating as we just cant foster at the moment. Please let us know what else we can do to help. Keeping everything crossed they all make it.

Hi Folks, just a further update on the situation, firstly I need to apologise as I'm just posting updates when I get them from the SSPCA and you'll also understand that due to the nature of the case there's a large chunk of information that I have to keep out of the public domain for now.
OK, firstly reports of 28 Greyhounds were a bit of an exageration, there is in fact 'only' 17. 12 are currently in the SPCA at Bothwell Bridge with the remaining 5 at the SPCA Milton.
All 17 dogs were vet checked yesterday, all require dentals and all but 2 of them were underweight, some more so that others, most need to gain about 5 - 6 kgs to get back up to their appropriate weights.
All the dogs are currently NOT available for rehoming pending a further vet check in 2 weeks time (5th December) at that point we hope atleast some will have re-gained enough weight and condition to be made available for adoption (at this stage there's probably atleast 3 who will hopefully fall into this category.) The dental treatment is starting ASAP and indeed one dog was treated today.
Of the 17 dogs, we're all fairly confident that 15 of them will recover and be well enough to be re-homed there's only 2 which we have some concerns about, these are the oldest 2 (one is apparently aged 12)
Thats really it for the mo, please prepare yourselves for a no holds barred foster appeal for 2 very old Greyhounds very shortly...(the ideal Christmas present..)
Thanks for letting us know what has happened so far, Dave. At least the number of dogs at 17 is better than 28! Hope they all make up weight in the next fortnight, especially the two that you are concerned about. Please keep us posted on how they are.

Please see the latest post in the Foster appeals section...
i have heard today that the person that owned the 17 dogs was an old man in his later years who was not keeping very well and that was the reason the dogs had been in a bit of a bad way. i was told that the old man signed the dogs over to the sspca with out any trouble.
I'm sorry but ok, so the guy was old and maybe not so well, but I really don't think that it can excuse the fact that these dogs were in a very poor state.
It takes time for animals to get into such a poor condition: time enough you would think for the owner to make some kind of alternative arrangements for his dogs or to ask for help in looking after them.
The dogs cannot speak out and ask for help themselves. Someone must do this on their behalf and I think that the fact that the owner did not seek help within an appropriate timescale is in itself neglect, regardless of the condition of his own health.

Correct Carol I agree entirely with everything you have said. There are thousands of elderly and ill people who care for animals and their dogs do not end up in this state. As you say it takes time for dogs to end up in such a poor condition and we should not loose sight of this fact. As this man was elderly perhaps he should have had the common sense to rehome his dogs while he was still young and healthy enough to do so. Sorry age is no excuse in this case.
On Thursday of last week Charles and I went to see the five at Milton.
There are four dogs: three black, one brindle; and one brindle bitch. All were sweet and friendly, and none in desperate condition. Scruffy and on the thin side (particularly the brindle boy) but otherwise not bad. Which is a relief for those five at least.
Thanks for letting us know, Lesley. A decent home with good food and plenty TLC and they'll all look like they should! Fingers crossed hope they don't wait too long.
Hi, i heard about the awful plight of these poor hounds at the xmas show. Just to let you know that I'm more than willing to foster at least one of the dogs.
