My Baggage
Permalink Closed

I first read this poem in a GAL newsletter about five years ago and came across it again on a fantastic site www.greyhoundmuses.com  be warned you will cry buckets!!  Please when you read these poems and muses think of the dogs who need a forever home and if you can open your hearts and your homes to them, especially the two old chaps just in who need somewhere warm and soft to rest tired old bones!

My Baggage

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled, and fed,

All nicely tucked in my warm, new bed

I'd like to open my baggage, Lest I forget

There is so much to carry..............So much to regret

Hmm..Yes there it is, right here on top

Lets unpack lonliness, heartache and loss.

And there by my leash, hides fear and shame.

As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave,

I still have to unpack my baggage called pain.

I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,

But I wasn't good enough..for they didn't want me.

Will you add to my baggage?

Will you help me unpack?

Or will you just look at my things..

And take me right back?

Do you have the time to help me unpack?

To put away my baggage,

to never repack?

I pray that you do....I'm so tired you see,

But I do come with baggage.

DO YOU STILL WANT ME?

This poem was discovered by Marita Johansen in Norway......Author unknown

What a lovely site , I have just wept buckets at some of the poems I read. Thank you, the site makes you remember what it is all about. I am away now to give my babies big cuddles.

I know this poem and can't read it any more because it makes me do this loads and loads. Not a good look at work.

Could ONLY read two before bursting into tears for the greys.

The site does definately hits the mark.

Maybe a section here that details the plight of greys with one or two true stories might just help get some desparate greys a new home. As hard as it is ... it is the truth.

The tears were pouring down my face,I could hardly read the words. They soooo hit the mark and my 3 have been cuddled beyond belief since I read them.

Hi all,I too read this poem,I saw it on the website run by Greyhounds In Need, the charity started by Anne Finch which helps the poor dogs in Spain (the cruelty over there is barbaric)and works with other international greyhound rescue organisations to rehome as many dogs as they can.Anyway....after reading that poem,I found another which really made me cry...it is so sad.It is called "My Baggage:Will You Still Want Me? " Read it if you can...it's a beautiful and desperately sad piece of writing .It is in Spanish first..scroll down for English.

Managed to read it - however had a tear in my eye, it is so sad that these things happen to these beautiful dogs who just want to be loved

Thanks for both these poems. As you say, they are both desperately sad.

I occasionally meet a man who walks two greyhounds, one of which was a racing dog from Italy and rescued from appalling conditions. The only person he trusts is his owner. It's awful to see him flinch and cower if you don't know him and approach to clap him. The fear in his eyes makes me want to gain his confidence and give him a cuddle, but I know the first move must come from him.

Thanks for the poem Dannyboy & the website.   I note the site also has articles about the racing industry and the treatment of the greys - good reading for anyone unaware of the realities of the race tracks!

Here is a website I especially like, the first poem is my favourite - 'Rescue Me'

Lovely site Greyluvver, the music was just to much for me!!!  I'm bad enough trying to read the poems without the sad music making me worse.  They really do hit the mark, It makes me feel so inadequate though, knowing that what is in these poems and muses are really happening, thank God for rescue bodies like GAL and all the others who are trying very hard to spread the word and get help to these lovely dogs.

This is a very clever poem and I can see a use for it within my counselling room too, so thanks Tracey for posting it.

I couldn't finish reading the second poem without a tear .  I know it's so sad, but we should be thankful for the ones we have saved.

Upon entering a little country store, a stranger noticed a sign reading, "Danger! Beware of Dog" posted on the glass door. Inside, he noticed a harmless greyhound asleep on the floor besides the cash register.
He asked the store manager, "Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of?"
"Yep, that's him," he replied.
The stranger couldn't help but be amused. "That certainly doesn't look like a dangerous dog to me. Why in the world would you post that sign?"
"Because," the owner replied, "before I posted that sign, people kept tripping over him."
