Hi can anyone help me with secure areas for letting Sunny off (in Edinburgh). I read a post somwhere about a secure fenced park maybe called Hailsland or somthing but i cant find the post again.

We have had Sunny for 3months she had been in a home for 18mths before being returned to GAL. Her last owners said she was very good off the lead but we waited two weeks before letting her off and she was great very quick to recall. Then after about two weeks she just took off one day. We thought it was just a one off but a few days after she did it again this time staight across a main road in rush hour. When i caught up with her (very red in the face and wheezing!!!!) she was in a blind panic and ran right in to me. I was really shaken up and also confused.

We always let her off in the same area of the park and at the end of her walk. We walk her 5 times a day 2 short walks 1st and last thing and 3 during the day lasting between 30mins-1hour. She is normally very quick to recall but both times gave no warning that she was going to run. I never let her off if the parks busy or lots of other dogs around.

Anyway I was lucky enough that I found a football pitch near our house that is fully fenced in and I have been taking her there every night and letting her off. I've been working on getting her to just walk when off the lead as  before the minute you let her off she would run full speed circles round you.  Steve came with me tonight and was amazed in the difference in her off the lead and said i needed to try her again in the park but I'm to scared. at the same time I'm getting a bit bored walking round the fenced area and Sunny must be too.

What does everyone think?

Do you know any other secure parks that I can take her to?

I met a greyhound owner at the park last week (she'd never heard of GAL) She told me i was cruel keeping Sunny on the lead as i was curbing her natural instinct to run. I told her better on the lead than hit by a car. I also had to bite my lip from saying your Grey is so fat it couldn't run if it wanted!! Silly woman

Hi Landess, firstly on the quote above, next time you meet this person, give her a GAL card and tell her to call me, bloomin eejits...

Can't help you with the rest of your question, when we lived in Edinburgh we used to take ours mostly to Portobello beach for some off lead action, ye gotta time this right however, there's a website somewhere that'll tell you when the tide is all the way out, if that coincides with very early morning or very late evening then yer lucks in, miles of pretty much unmolested beach for Sunny to run around in, there's only really one way on and off the beach so if you keep her on lead till your far enough away from there it should be fine if you think her recall is coming on well..

Thanks Dave.

Really do think she is comming on well have been throwing a ball and recalling her mid chase and she comes straight back, a pocket full of tip bits helping. To be honest its my confidence thats gone, was so scared the last time she did it. It was 2 months ago and the bond with me and Sunny is alot stronger now (she follows me everywhere) So we might give the beach a try thank you.

Drop me a PM if you fancy it & Ill give you directions & my mobile no)

ps. I live in Edinburgh & know a good few walks you can do - so if you can make it along this Sunday I can enlighten you on the safe places !
