I am looking after a dog at the minute for a Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue group near where I live (Near Newcastle). He is a lovely fella and seems to be settling in nicely. My problem is that when my Dad came round to see us today he thinks that Deano has had his vocal cords or voice box removed. I was really upset about the thought of this. I have never heard of this before and surely it must be illegal? I can't see how something so awful can be allowed. I thought someone on here might know about this.
He has not made any noise at all since he came here but my other Grey doesn't bark and I am sure I read somewhere that they rarely make much noise anyway.
Shelley, that is a sad thought, but I have heard of this happening before. I don't know too much about it, but it is a possibility. Does Deano ever whine at all, or is he totally silent?
Deano is completely silent when he is awake. He does make sort of quiet 'humph' sounds when he is asleep and trying to get comfy. I should have asked my dad what made him think that his voice box had been removed, as I said, my other dog Saffron is quite quiet, the only time she barks is more of a yap to tell me she has wee'd in the kitchen!
Hi Shelly, Deano sounds great, it's good you are helping out your local adoption centre, they will really appreciate it!!...I've never heard of voice box removal, I really can't see any reason why it would be done and I think it's a huge jump to assume this has been done cos the dog is quiet, bottom line Greyhounds are just quiet dogs (even your Saffron sounds like a NOISY hound compared to some of my mob) My boy Wizard has never uttered a word in his life and I can prolly count on one hand the amount of times my Ruby has barked in the 5 years we've had her...bottom line hounds are just quiet dogs so don't worry about Deano, he'll have his voice box, whether he uses it or not is his choice!!...
Just spoke to Dad, he said if you feel under Deano's neck (where you would suppose his adams apple is), it feels strange, like two pieces with the middle missing. I dunno why he feels that its a voice box removal... all I know is he has had extensive experience with dogs over the years. I looked it up online but it would seem that its more common to do this operation in america and not here - although it is done.
weird!!....best I can say if it's bothering him take him to the vet but from what you say it doesn't sound like it is!!....anyways can I say what I'm sure everyone is wanting to say.....PICCIES PLEASE!!!..
Thanks Jenny!! He is so sweet. He takes three teddy bears to bed with him! Also, he has had loads of his teeth removed as they were in really bad condition. It means his tongue keeps falling out of the side of his mouth! Precious!
Deano looks gorgeous, and what a beautiful colour. As for the voice box thing it is a pratice in America along with de-clawing cats for the designer pet that will not make to much noise or scratch the posh furniture, sad but true, I think it is barbaric and in the same line as docking pups tails because that is what the breed should look like, it is just awful. From what I have read on the internet, voice-box removal does seem to be common practise in America but the least said about that the better.
However it doesn't seem to have 'taken off' over here and the only real reason I can see for it being done over here is for cancer or some kind of severe respiratory problem.
If your dog is tattoed, then you should be able to look him up on the greyhound data base and find out a bit about his background. Unless he is an American dog or has had some major condition, I can't see any other reason why this would have been done.
You could also have a look and see if he has any scarring because form the pictures I have seen, scarring associated with this kind of procedure seems pretty extensive.
However, I must admit sometimes I think I've got three of the MOST noisiest dugs in Falkirk when they get going..... Zak barks like a banshee, Missy barks back at you as in talking back and dusty hates the postman and barks for britain !!!
The only silent dog unless provoked like teasing him with a ball or as a major after thought joining in Dusty's barking at the postman is our labrador... Max.
Zak is a lurcher but 99% greyhound, Missy is a greyhound, Dusty is a small lurcher and Max is the labrador.
Barking Scale....
Max.... proper deep woof Missy.... female version of proper deep woof Zak.... Barks as though there is a howl within the woof Dusty.... a yapper

I have checked his neck and I can't see any scarring. Hopefully he just has a weird neck and thats it!!
what a handsome boy he is and such a beautiful colour.
as the rest say, some dogs are noisy and some are not. dave tends to woof right in daisy's face if he wants to play but rarely makes a noise out of the house. daisy squeals if she wants cuddles but will bark outside the house.
they are all individual but i'd get the vet to check him out next time he has to go there.
Deano is so gorgeous but he is such a naughty boy!! He keeps pinching socks from my little boys feet. I don't let him near James on the floor because he is only one and way smaller than Deano. If I walk past the dog he uses his lips to grab at the sock then runs off with it!! I can't imagine why he does it but its really funny. (don't worry dave... I am being careful with the two of them!)
