I did a sponsored cycle last year for Guide Dogs for the Blind. It was along the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals from Glasgow to Edinburgh - 64miles in total I think. It was big event with (I think) more than 100 cyclists taking part. I thought it would be good for GAL to organise an event like this. A lot of money could be made and maybe a lot of publicity too. The first scheduled stop of the cycle I went on was at the Falkirk Wheel where the cyclists stopped for lunch. There were lots of organisers there to meet us and a few guide dogs too. I thought it would be a good idea if maybe a sponsored cycle could be organised, and any people who don't do the cycle could turn up at the Falkirk Wheel with their dogs and have an awareness day there and greet the cyclists as they arrive for lunch. There are a lot of tourists/visitors to the Falkirk Wheel in the summer and I bet a few greys would generate a lot of interest.

The guide dog folk did it pretty well with a mini busses collecting us all from Stevenson College to take us to west side of Glasgow, with a lorry for all the bikes. We all got T-shirts which advertised guide dogs and they had 3 scheduled stops on the way where we were given refreshments and were met by organisers and dogs.

The minimum sponsership was £25 and I spoke to a few folk who said they just wanted to do the cycle so just paid the £25 themselves so they could come. I think if people got their friends, relatives, work colleagues etc to join in a lot of people would be intrested in acheiving a cycle like that even if they have nothing to do with GAL and then there would be the added bonus of all the visitors at the Falkirk Wheel which would see the cyclists and all the hounds.
Just a thought...
I would be more than happy to help organise it if anyone thinks it would be a good idea

Hi C J

It sounds like a good idea, I had a similar thought why don't you e-mail me at tracey@gal.org.uk and we can exchange a few ideas and see if we can get it up and running!
