Well done Jenny, I'm sure Ziggy is delighted to have found his Forever Home - he is gorgeous Look forward to hearing more about him & hopefully see him for real at a Strathclyde Park walk one day
Is he very skinny then? Just that a lot of vets would prefer a dog to be at ideal weight and healthy before operating? He doesn't look too bad in the photos though - and he is gorgeous
The vet said Ziggy was 25 point something kgs and he should be around 30kgs. I knew when I saw him he was underweight so I wasn't surprised. She talked about the anaesthetic for greyhounds and said he should be fine.
I had a scary moment last night when I gave him a manicure. Cut the quick in one of his black nails and it started bleeding. I was calm and controlled and using a tip I read in retired racing greyhounds for dummies I stopped it with a used tea bag of all things. It worked really quickly. His nice duvet and my carpet have blood stains but at least I didn't have him back at the vet twice in one day!
She also scanned him and he is microchipped so I will be changing the owner details.
I'm sure your vet knows best, & I don't want to worry you, it's just that I've often heard very experienced rescuers say that they will wait until the dog reaches full weight and full health before any surgery (unless of course it is very urgent life-saving surgery)- although there is only a slight risk with these anaesthetics, there is still a small risk and this is slightly increased if the dog is not completely healthy and up to weight. 25 kilos does sound quite low. Ditto for vaccinations - a dog that is in poor shape or off-colour should not be vaccinated until it is well, so I've been lead to believe . Come to think of it, with the last foster I had although she was OK weightwise and urgently needed spayed, my vet would not do it as she had diorrhea when I got her, nor would they vaccinate - they gave a week's worth of antibiotics and I had to wait until her tum was OK before they would spay or vax.

Hi Jenny
Thats good that the vet discussed the anaesthetic, at least that should put your mind at ease that she knows about the breed. My vet knows loads about the Greyhounds and he was brilliant with one of my dogs Kaz, who was really underweight but v healthy non the less. Just like humans, you get healthy thin ones and some healthy not so thin!!
Dawn, Big huge over weight very healthy Mac, Presley the Mutt, Molly the sweetheart and Denzel the fat cat!! x
Just to reply to Amber re the anaesthetic issue. I did wonder about that myself but as he is in good shape other than having had poor nutrition in the past, the vet said it won't be an issue. His other health checks were all fine apart from as I mentioned, the teeth and lump on his leg. He isn't sickly or weak so she would have waited had that been the case.
I got a message from her yesterday to say she had a look at the cells from his leg under microscope and it appears to be just fatty tissue. Obviously it will be clearer when removed.
I have used the vet for over a year with Jasper and of course his sister Jasmine when she was very ill and consequently PTS, so I trust them totally and they have a great approach with the animals. I guess Ziggy will have gained some weight by the time his op is due anyway.
I know I've come in late on this posting Jenny, but I'm so delighted for you and Ziggy!! Just knew everything would work out for you! Hope to see you and to meet Ziggy at Strathclyde Park on 5 Feb if you're there
