URGENT - vet required who can glue tear
Permalink Closed

Hiya,

Sorry for the urgent posting, but I need information by tomorrow morning. Ruby has a tear in the skin in her back, we've phoned the vet, thay say they will see her tomorrow (which is fine as its not really bleeding), but it doesn't sound like something they can stitch.

I seem to remember someone mentioning their vet glueing tears to avoid the problems of stitches - can anyone recommend a vet in Glasgow/Paisley area with this ability?

Many thanks

Janet - it was Charles's vet who had glued a tear on one of his dogs.  Charles appears on the forum as "takecon".  He is north side of Glasgow - so possibly not too far from you.  Are you certain your vet can't do the glueing thing?

If you email him rather than pm'ing you are likely to catch him.

Thanks Lesley, I've sent him an email.

I asked the vet particularly if they would glue, and they don't. They don't want to stitch it either, and are suggesting possibly just one stitch to hold the hole together (it's about 1" across). I'm keen to reduce the healing time as much as possible, as I'm not sure how to stop Ruby scratching this once it starts to heal! Wound is on her back, a few inches behind shoulder blades.

The joys of owning Greys! All the same, wouldn''t trade them for anything

Many Thanks

Once you have got it repaired you can put a loose pad of gauze over it and hold it in place with microporous tape - available from any chemist or even supermarket.  Micropore tape sticks lightly to the hair and is easy to remove but because the wound is quite high on her back it should stop her from scratching it.  Just a loose pad of gauze so that the air can still get to the wound.

Thanks Dave & Lesley,

There's a Hyndland St vet's - hoping it's the same one, too much of a coincidence not to be. And a trip to Boots for supplies

Thanks for the advice

Janet - how did you get on with Ruby at the vet?

Hiya,

Sorry, I've only just regained forum access. Ruby was fine at the vets, a couple of stitches and she's as good as new (well apart from the bald shaved bit!). The vet felt with the size of the wound stitching was best.

Luckily she can't reach the stitches at all to scratch/lick etc so hopefully it will heal up quickly.

Good news.
I'm sure it will heal quickly.
Lots of cuddles from Ziggy.

Jan - glad Ruby is ok - if you havent already - sorry not been on line all week) get some aloe vera gel directly on the wound - you can slather it on - it takes away redness, itchiness etc & Im convinced heals any wounds in double to time - any chemist will have it on the shelf - get the 99% pure gel if you can - only a few quid.

Hugs to Ruby

Hi

Sorry i did not see the post till after the vet appointment.

Yes - two of my hounds have had super glue on skin tears. In both cases either stiches or staples were used as well  It very much depends on the size, location and age of the wound.

Vets like to fix wounds as soon as possible before the skin starts to die.  It heals better. So try to get to the vet asap.  Dont feed the hound either

Glad to see I got the right vet in the end. A VERY hungry Ruby was stitched-up the next morning and is recovering well. Luckily she is unable to reach the wound, and we are helping out by scratching near to it for her (and covering with Aloe Vera gel - thanks Suzanne).

Charles - the email I sent to you was returned, don't know if you still use the email address in your profile?
