Douglas & Stiffness
Permalink Closed

Douglas has been very very stiff in the back legs for several months.   He is only 17 months old but seems to be in pain when he gets up or trys to get off the couch.   He walks in a very stiff way and in not nearly as free moving and as fluid as Lulu, his mum.

Once he runs with Lulu he seems fine and can now keep up with her in speed and agility.

It's after he's been lying for a while he has real difficulty getting up and whimpers in obvious pain.   I've had him at the Vet a few times, including a full set of X-rays of the pelvis, hips etc. and the Vet can't find anything wrong.

I'm quite worried about him and would welcome any advice or suggestions.

Regards,

Hi Alan, sounds like you need a visit to a 'bone man'. These are 'unofficial' Greyhound experts, lots of trainers use them to tend to stiffness and injuries and the like to their racing dogs, they might be able to find sumit the vet can't, they are really very good (and they don't charge a fortune either!)..I've PM'ed you with a contact..

I met the "Bone" man on Sunday morning, before the walk in Strathclyde Park.

He thought Douglas had a trapped nerve in his back and he did some quick twisting of Douglas's spine and he thought that would do the trick.

I've been out the Country since Monday and just got back this evening.

Unfortunately, Douglas is still very stiff and is in obvious pain.

I have some other contacts to try and I'll post how I get on.

If anyone has any ideas  or suggestions, I'd appreciate them.

Regards,

Alan.

Hi Alan - sorry to hear that Douglas is still in pain....have you tried going down the route of alternative therapies??

Im a little bit of a sceptic but once tried a course of something called "Cranio-sacral" therapy on my horse (at the time) - who was having serious issues with anyone mounting him - he would spin & rear as if in pain. A woman came out & "laid her hands" on him (a bit like Reiki) but she worked with unblocking nerve impulses & found that my horse had serious blockages in his neck from a bad rear/fall over backwards that had happened to him as a 1yr old. It had taken a further 3 years to manifest itself. 3 sessions & he was cured & a MUCH more chilled out boy!

The woman now unfortunately lives in France but Im sure if you looked it up on the internet you would find someone that does this therapy on animals as its popular n humans. If i hadnt seen it with my own eyes I wouldnt have believed it could work - but it did!

How about hydrotherapy or acupunture?? all a bit pricey but worth asking your vet if you think they could help??? (now covered under reputable insurance policies if referred by a vet)

Fingers crossed you find an answer to this soon!

Kind regards
Suzanne

Thanks Suzanne,

I'll try and find out if anyone does the "hands on " thing.   The Vet did suggest accupuncture and I intend to discuss this with him further.   I know that you were attending the Glasgow Vet School.

I'm currently carrying out a Project for them for an Isolation Unit for Horses and Bulls.   I noticed a few dogs being walked wjhen I was there yesterday, including a Brindle Greyhound.   I was too involved to talk to anyone but I wondered if the Vet School took on dogs with problems like Douglas's as a live project.

If you know any names, I'll contact them and take Douglas to the next Project Meeting.   I'm dealing with Prof. Logue if thats any use.

Regards,

Alan

Hi Alan - I know that GUVS do have the specialists that may be able to offer you help but you can on go to GUVS by being referred there by your own vet so speak to them & see if they think its well worth your while.

Get on the internet tho & see what you can find - there are loads of good veterinary advice sites out there. Good luck & keep us posted on how Douglas is doing.

Hi Alan

I'm sorry to hear Douglas is still struggling, and hopefully accupuncture will be just the answer....its def worth a try.  However, with regard to the vet school I thought I would share a little story with you. Like Suzanne says, get your own vet to refer you to the Vet School.   My first GH (Kaz) came from the vet school after spending approx 6yrs there as a blood donor.  He had proved to be very popular with all that worked there and the vets and nurses came out to wish him good luck the day I collected him, many of them were in tears.  I promised to keep them informed of his progress...enjoying living in a home...the first time in his life.  I kept in contact with them and sent photographs.  However, when Kaz's health deteriorated v rapidly I was desperate for a 2nd opinion, and the fact that he had been so 'well loved' at the Vet School I telephoned them.  Despite the fact I had a contact name, they were rather abrupt to say the least and told me to go to my own vet and get him to refer Kaz.  Despite my pleading for help from them they stuck by their guns and refused to offer even a snippet of advice!  I ended up getting great support from the pdsa, who received a donation from me for their advice.

So, if I were you I would just get your own vet to refer you, or better still find someone else who can administer the accupuncture on Douglas.

Good Luck

Dawn
