Hi Folks, I try not to do this too often but needs must. The next few months will be pretty slow for GAL and with the bank balance at an all time low another huge vets bill was something I didn't want. Fraid we got another huge vet bill today. Here's the story..
About 6 months ago a well meaning member of the pubic heard of a dog that was going to be shot by his trainer, that member of the public managed to save the dog and decided to keep it. that dog was a 4yr old Blue Greyhound who's now called ROWLEY. The member of the public had his heart in the right place but didn't know the first thing about Geyhounds, Rowley spent the next 4 months of his life in a garden shed getting very little exersize.
2 months ago the same member of the public heard the same trainer was going to shoot another dog so he 'rescued' it aswell, a 2yr old Greyhound, also blue in colour. Rowley now had a 'shed' mate.
Both dogs were now kept in a small garden shed, given very little exersize and sadly they were still being fed high protein racing food.
2 weeks ago and the inevitable happened, the dogs had a fight over food, confined in a small shed it was really an accident waiting to happen. Rowley sustained a 6 inch wound to his right front leg. His wound remained untreated for over a week.
At this point the member of the public decided he needed some help and contacted GAL, after speaking to Denise he attended our Glasgow walk last Sunday with the 2 dogs. When we saw Rowley's leg we knew he had to get vet treatment on it very quickly, after spending most of the day talking to the member of the public we persuaded him to surrender Rowlet to GAl and to keep the 2yr old dog as a 'proper' family pet, in his house.
Arrangements were made to pick up Rowley this morning, get his injury treated, he was then due to go to a temporary foter home for the next few days then onto a permanent foster home on Sunday.
We received a call from the member of the public on Tuesday afternoon this week, the dogs had had another fight and Rowley was very badly injured. We made quick arrangements to get him to a local vet for emergency treatment. On arrival at the vets Rowely was so bad they just sedated him and waited to see if he survived the night. Thankfully her did and was operated on on Wednesday. The operation lasted 3 and a half hours.
Tonight Rowley ws released by the vet and is now spending his first ever night indoors in a house in a GAL foster home.
Rowleys vet bill currently stands at £483.63 he'll need on going vet treatment for the next 2 months with regular wound checks and bandage changes.
If you can help in anyway to contribute to this 'mini' appeal for Rowley please email david@gal.org.uk or send donations (payable to GAL) to -
GAL Treasurer, Carmichael Boat Cottage, Hyndford Bridge, Lanark, ML11 8SJ
christ who did those bandages?? they are a state! (sorry - occupational hazard...) Poor wee man...it really beggers belief at some folks naivety...
Ive been worrying about this for a while - everyone is ploughing so much effort into raising funds for the Kennel fund (which is fab) - but at the detriment to GALs main fund - no point raising money for the future if we cant help the hounds today!!
I wish I could help with this guy but I cant at the moment....but we need to remember that GAL needs day to day funds too - maybe the auction of promise can be for GAL main funds only etc ......fingers crossed the poor wee guy makes a full recovery....as do the GAL bank accounts...

The member of the public did have his heart in the right place, but oh dear what an outcome. Poor Rowley ,he looks realy down in the dumps, can,t blame the poor boy. Pretty skint just now, but I will write to you soon as I can Dave. Do you think joe public will get in touch I wonder, before trying to rescue anymore.

Now, update on Rowley, he had a comfortable (ish) night, foster mum slept on sofa beside him, he slept most of the night but woke the foster mum up half a dozen times, seems he was having pretty bad nightmares in his sleep and was thrashing round a lot, poor boy.
He had a trip to our vet this morning for a check up and his bandages changed, our vet was very happy with his wounds so thats a good sign, his bandages have now been changed (all nice and pretty now Suzanne!) Only real concern is his left front leg has started to swell a little bit. He's on lots of different tablets so is still pretty zonked out for now. He's due back to the vet again on Monday for another change of bandages and if the wounds have healed enough he'll get his drains out (he's got 4 in). Fingers crossed his leg will be OK..
More updates as and when, if you can help with Rowleys Appeal please email david@gal.org.uk
Well Done everyone who has sent money for poor Rowley.
Dave i hope you don't mind me saying but when appeals like this go up I think people panic and think they have to send alot. You don't I'm sure even £1 would help.
I've had a collection tin on my desk at work for a few weeks. Every day me and my staff just empty whatever small change is in our purses into it. I counted it today and there is over £10 in it which I'm sending to Dave for Rowley.
All those 1p 2p and 5ps soon add up.
I hope poor Rowley is feeling a bit more comfortable and once again thank god for GAL.

Hi Folks, as Landess says every little helps (and you all have already so THANKS) Rowley is MUCH better now, swelling gone from leg and he's looking a bit brighter, his pictures are below minus the bandages so apologies for those of you that have just eaten but I figured you'd like to see him, this is after all whats it's all about - saving dogs lives.
god that other dog REALLY went to town on poor Rowley didnt he!
are those scalpel lacerations in pic 2 Dave to help stretch the skin so that it will eventually pull over enough to stitch up?????? never seen anything like it....
Glad the wee man is on the mend !

Bluddy heck - what a sight. Looks like that boy has been very lucky indeed not to lose his leg. He's an absolute honey, so he is. But, then, I do so love the blue ones.
There's an enormous difference in Rowley already! He seems more interested somehow from the expression in his eyes. What a mess the other dog made of him and yes, his shoulder looks like tenderised steak - but it's wonderful to see he's on the mend!
I should also have said: MASSIVE congratulations and respect to Rowley's foster mum. It can't be easy looking after a dog with such extensive wounds. You're an absolute hero, whoever you are (or have I been a numptie - is it you, Dave?).
So glad he's getting better - what a relief for everyone involved I bet. He looks such a sweetie - here's to a speedy recovery and a very special home when he's better.

Hi Fiona, fraid I can't take the credit - clue is in the picture, do you really think a beige rug with red squares and a white mantlepeice would find any place in an old punks house?
Our hero (actually heroin) is Jennifer (NOT the Jennifer on this forum) she's not online as she doesn't 'do' technology but I will pass on to her your wishes.
I now have to say a huge big thanks to everyone who's donated to Rowleys appeal, my post bag was buldging today, you are ALL very nice people. There may be more money en route but the total donated at the mo is £465 and I have been 'promised' by another generous GAL supporter that they would make up any shortfall remaining this Saturday (which means currently she'll be donating £18.63) thanks once again folks for your overwhelming generosity.
There is still my donation to get to you but it can go in the pot if not needed for wee Rowley.
Rowley's ongoing bills will be around £40 a visit and this will be ongoing, weekly, for the next couple of months so we've plenty treatment for Rowley still to be paid for in the future...
