In the time we've had Daz we've given him two worming tablets. The vet prescribed Drontal. The first time we did it we didn't know Daz that well and he was not particularly settled anyway so the changes we noticed in him were not certain to be due to the wormer but last week I saw the same things again and feel more sure that the Drontal is disagreeing with him in some way.
It's not that his poo changes particulary, very little really. It's that he acts depressed, goes off his food, stops wagging his tail when we go near him, is more likely to sleep separately from us rather than always lying at our feet for watching TV and stuff. He does still pull himself together and enjoy some of his walks and runs but he's less likely to run, and he tends to trudge along behind us on walks more often. So it's not ALL the time but there's just a general impression of a week to ten days of him acting very under the weather after worming.
It's precautionary worming anyway, it's not like we ever saw worms.
Anyone got any experiences with worming their hounds, recommendations at all?
By the way, he wasn't upset by the actual administration of the tablet. Peter just gave him small strips of chomp and then slipped a tablet in then followed up with a chomp and he never even seemed to suspect anything different had just happened.
We use Drontal with both Harry and Pearly every three months but don't notice any changes in them once they've taken the tabs. Normally we worm them at the weekend, just in case they get runny bottoms, but they've not even had that.
I'm sorry this isn't any help, beyond maybe backing up your thoughts that Daz doesn't do well with Drontal. Maybe someone else can give you more info/advice on alternatives.
We've always given our dogs Drontal with no adverse effects and Tilly was given Drontal at Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home. When we asked for wormers at our local vets we were given a drug called Millbemax Dog. We haven't tried it yet so don't know if it causes an side effects. In fact Tilly is due it tomorrow so will let you know how it goes.
If you're concerned maybe you should mention it to you vet and they could try another wormer next time.
We gave Tilly her wormer on Saturday afternoon and she was a little quiet in the evening and yesterday. Not sure if it was the wormer or coincidence. She seems fine now so who knows whether it was the wormer or not - will see in three months time whether or not it happens again! Hope Daz has brightened up and is back to his usual happy and waggy self!
