We've been scratching out heads now for some time on how to make GAL voluteers a bit more visable at events, we've tried name badges and stuff like that but doesn't seem to work too well, so, any ideas? We need something that will stand out, not make us look stupid and be easy to wear regardless of what else is worn by a volunteer....Anyone any ideas??...
What about floresant bibs (yellow or orange) with GAL logo on the back? We used them for a jogging club as the jog leaders. It made us stand out and I think peoples eyes are automatically drawn to the bright bib amongst the every day clothes of other people.
EEK! Sorry, I know they're very practical and would certainly be noticed but I can't see myself in a bib.....especially not one in bright orange or yellow with my complexion.
Personally, I was thinking an eye-catching pair of Jimmy Choo's and a wee Gucci coat would be quite up my street.
Failing that a sweatshirt with 'volunteer' printed on it would do so long as it was in black or maybe grey at a push.
i think the sweatshirt idea is the best. perhaps with the GAL logo on it so that people know what you're all about. fluorescent bibs are good if the volunteers are willing to wear them but it sounds like a no go.
I ain't wearin no bib! I pity the fool who makes me wear a bib. I'd need to have my glass of milk drugged in the style of Mr T before I wore a flourescent bib. It would be like being at a bad 90s rave!! Aciiiiiid!
Personally I'd like a red hooded jacket with the GAL logo on the back.
I already have a GAL T shirt (white) and Sweatshirt (grey) that I bought from the GAL shop and wear when I'm at Bothwell SPCA. I think they are both pretty visible with the big logo on there is no mistaking your intent. They are also both standing up to frequent washing. Polo shirts in a variety of colours with the GAL logo on them would be good idea. Then we'd have individuality as you could choose your colour but still everyone would have the GAL logo. Not original I know but functional and inexpensive.
Failing that what about I'M A GAL VOLUNTEER! Bibs just like the dogs I NEED A HOME! (Calm down, just joking!)
Thisis a very good question, and very timely for me because I was wondering the precise same thing on Saturday at the can collection. I have a GAL tee-shirt and a long-sleeve GAL top, which are great and, as Joyce says, they're unmissable. But when it's freezing cold like it was on Saturday there's no way to wear just these tops. I wore my white GAL baseball cap but I don't think anyone noticed it. Nora had on some GAL badges and brooches, which again are lovely but not very noticeable.
I personally wouldn't mind a bib. But, then, I have no qualms about looking like a tw@t!!
I'd love a bright red GAL jacket for this sort of thing. Red is the magic colour!
Hi I think its got to be something that can be worn over your jacket. Saturday in Kelso was snowing so its got to be a bright waistcoat like maybe the council workers wear?
I know many of us have the white or grey t-shirts/sweatshirts with GAL logo, but I quite like the idea of red which could be worn by volunteers only, perhaps with 'volunteer' printed on it. I also like the waistcoat idea that could be worn over a coat or jacket.
What about a sash, going over the shoulder and diagonally down to waist. Printed with, pure and simple, " Greyhound Awareness League ". It tells people exactly what you're involved with and can be worn over any clothes.
Regular volunteers could have their own and a supply could be taken to any Gal events by the organisers, to be given out to other volunteers as neccessary and returned at the end of the day.
I like the sash idea, simple but noticable. You can wear a heavy coat or just a t-shirt and still put on a sash and it will not get in the way, sometimes though pictures say more than words? Something like a running dog with the letters GAL makes people ask what the letters stand for then you can explain. Nora

Sweatshirts & t-shirts sound great, BUT .... GAL would have to have a multitude of sizes available! (Not everyone is a trim size! ). No, maybe the bibs aren't the latest fashion, but they are noticeable, and isn't that the whole point? something that people will be able to look out for. I do like the idea of a red one to match the "I need a home" coats the dogs wear!

If I had to wear a waistcoat like a council worker, Luca would probably bite me. He's got a real thing about reflective vests and goes nuts whenever he sees someone with them on. Don't know why....must be something from a former life.
I know that I would certainly never be able to bring him to a GAL event again if there were loadsa folk wandering about with them on. Poor wee man.
Oh No! Someone actually liked the idea of the bib with I'M A GAL VOLUNTEER!
I was only joking, but honestly, upon reflection they would be very easy for volunteers turning up to help who perhaps had not purchased a t-shirt or sweatshirt. They would certainly be noticeable!!
I also think that fleece jackets would be a great idea. Maybe in red with the GAL logo on the back. What's the opinion on this?
How were you thinking of funding whatever is decided? I'd be more than happy to pay for my own bib, fleece or whatever. I would not expect GAL to pay for them. I'd rather the money was spent on the dugs!
Even if the fleece idea is not the prefered option, is there any chance of GAL having more clothing printed?
The bibs are the most practical, probably most economical (?) and also the easiest to be seen in during the colder months for over a jacket. You don't need to get bright orange plastic ones either! Just get red or white ones made of the same cloth material as the dogs GAL homeless coats are made of. Nice big GAL logo on the front and a bit of blurb on the front and back - you can make them a bit more tasteful than the Council jobs.
In summer you can use GAL t-shirts and sweatshirts if you want to.
EEEK to the sash idea - not a bloke thing at all......Miss World only!!
We certainly wouldn't have a problem wearing a bib like the dogs do or a vest of some sort. Surely helping find the Greys and lurchers a new home is the most important thing than what we look like.
hmmm..as expected this one has thrown up lots of different opinions...
The issues we have here are many, I really thing the BEST thing would be for our volunteers to be kitted out in a 'special' set of GAL clothes, so that would mean T-Shirt, Hoodie and Sweatshirt (or similar) different colour from all the rest of the GAL merchandise with a different logo or summit on. The problem with that is firstly cost, small runs of each item are expensive to produce, additionally the other problem is when volunteers stop volunteering for GAL we'd want the items back and that would prove very difficult.
The other options are less expensive and much easier to handle - Bibs, Sashes, Hats, that type of thing, easy to distribute on the day then get back from the volunteers, issue here is they generally make the wearer look like an arse althought the point I'd make is would you rather look like an arse at a well run well organised GAL event OR look cool in your own clothes at a GAL event that was a total shambles where potential new owners left thinking GAL were a bunch of arses?
The only other thing I can think of here is setting all the volunteers on fire so they are easy to spot at events..
A beanie is a wooly hat Dave I believe. Or one of those collectable bean filled toys
I would be happy to pay for my 'kit' if it would mean avoiding a sash or a bib.
It would remind me of those torturous Monday mornings back in 1990 when it was double hockey or netball for 2 hours in the freezing cold being last picked for the team (or second from last if smelly kelly was in). Do you want to pay for my psychotherapy Dave?
Guess as Events Co-ordinator, I'm obliged to say that I'd rather look like an arse at a well-run event than a supermodel at a badly run event! Thanks Dave!
Perhaps volunteers could be asked to sign for their kit and pay a deposit, which will be returned if and when they return it? I wouldn't mind doing that if it meant I had something nice to wear. Oh and I am digging the red hoody and beanie vibe btw.
Failing that I'll just need to put a call in to Trinnie and Suzannah.

My favourite thing at school WAS double hockey!!! Not netball as it was too gentile. I even played for the first eleven. Haven't got a problem with a bib of sorts as it is definately the cheaper option. And it is ok to look like an arse for a day as long as you don't act like one then or the rest of the time!! When will the decision be made?
Don't know if this helps Dave but I have a good contact for embroidery onto tops and fleeces etc. I used him when I got new uniforms made for my staff. He is based in the borders and was two thirds cheaper than any of the Edinburgh based quotes I got. Just thought if some people wanted to add Volunteer to the back of an excisting GaL top it might be a cheaper way of doing it. Or if you can find a cheap supplier of red fleeces and sweatshirts he might then be able to stitch the writing and GAL logo on for you.
Just a thought.
