I would check his poo for blood and mucus. If there is any blood or a lot of mucus I would take him to the vet for a check up and maybe an antibiotic injection in case he has an infection.

If there's no blood or mucus and he doesn't have any diarroheoa overnight I would give him something light for breakfast. Maybe some scrambled egg, or a slice of dry toast and see how he is, if he's ok he could maybe get a small amount of dog food in the evening.

He's maybe eaten something rotten off the ground?

Boiled white rice and a couple of chopped boiled eggs is a good dinner also for an upset tum.

Yip I agree with Lita. Starve him for 24 hrs then introduce him to small dinners of rice, egg, pasta, chicken or fish (boiled not canned with oil).

A chicken stock cube put into rice or pasta water helps make it really tasty.

In the past we've always starved our dogs for twenty-four hours with plenty of water available and after twenty-four hours given them small amounts of boiled rice and chicken which is gentle on their stomachs.

I'd just keep a eye on him (and maia) and see how they go. But if you are concerned maybe a trip to the vet for reassurance and pos antibiotics if it continues for more than 24 hours. More than likely he's probably eaten something that he shouldn't have and it's upset his stomach.

Hope he improves soon and Maia doesn't get it.

I can't give any better advice than what everyone else has said before! Just hope that George is better soon and that Maia doesn't catch the bug. Fingers crossed!

George seems a bit better today. His tummy is making funny noises but I expect he is just hungry because he hasn't eaten anything all day. We will give him a light tea this evening and see how he gets on. Maia seems fine so fingers crossed.....

glad to hear george is better. this seems to be a recurring topic amongst greyhounds - dave has been to the baby-dog-doctor (vet) tonite cos he had a bad runny bot - he ended up with an injection and tablets !!

he won't mind the tablets because he has them in cheese !

Christianne, I think the noisy rumbly tummy usually happens when they have sore tums.

Tree, sorry to hear Dave has a sore tum also and had to visit the dog-doctor with it. Hope he's fine soon

General advice is usually that if diorrhea continues for more than 24 hours, a vet check up is best. My Petra had the dire-rear (as I call it) for 48 hours last week (as a result of eating something horrible and rotten I think), so took her off to vet and she instantly dried up on the meds and antibiotics and felt a lot better.

If your dog is going into kennels I would def. give vet a ring in case medication is needed.

my poor kids seem to be suffering with this at the moment. had them both to the vet tonite. instead of the usual tablets, he's given us pro-kolin which is like our kaolin-and-morphine but for dogs. we also have to keep to a bland diet (chicken & rice/pasta) for a few days. hope it works.

as well as that, the vet took a swab (yuk) from daisy and we have to phone for the result on saturday. if the result is nothing definite i don't know what the next step is

they seem to suffer from this on a regular basis but there is nothing in our garden that could cause it and, due to various recent circumstances, they haven't been to the park for a few days.

What a shame both Dave and Daisy are afflicted! I'll keep my fingers crossed they're better soon. Let us know how they're getting on. Isn't it strange that some dogs are more prone to this than others?

Poor Dave and Daisy - hope their bums are nice and dry very soon and they feel better. Pearly had a nasty bug once and it was awful to see how floppy and downright ill and miserable she looked.

Hi there, I would be interested to hear what the results from the swab are?

My dog also suffers from a sensitive stomach with recurrent bouts of diarrohea. I've heard that some greyhounds get their stomachs "cleansed" before a race?

Maybe the next step is a prescription diet. Hopefully not as I've got a cat on a prescrption diet and they're really expensive. Kayri manages to get by on a good quality dried food like James Wellbeloved, Hills Lamb & Rice (unfortunately she won't even look at Burns!). I'd probably starve if she had to go on one as well.

Hopefully you'll get to to the "bottom" of it.

Hazel, i'll let you know the results of the swab here when i get them. I hope they don't need a prescription diet too - mainly because of the cost, it's horrendous and it would be for two of them, so double-horrendous!!!

even when they get these unpleasant bouts, their general health seems much the same - no loss of appetite and still keen to go on their walks so they can't be feeling too poorly. it's a mystery (wasn't that a song by Toyah Wilcox??!!!! lol)

Kayri's neither up nor down when she has a bout either.

Kayri got no dinner tonight as her a**e is stinkin! But that's because she ate cat poo from the (covered) litter tray when I was out earlier!! Disgusting.

no news yet of the results of daisy's swab. i have to ring the vet again on monday.

the pro-kolin was a complete waste of time..... we have ended up with antibiotics as nothing has improved in the rear end area - i seem to have cooked a mountain of pasta in the last few days

Hi Hazel, only got the results from the vet tonite.

Goodness knows what the results were - the vet didn't actually go into details but said we needed to change the antibiotics. Now they're on one Baytril (?) a day instead of 2 metranidazole a day. It was difficult to have much of an indepth conversation with the vet cos she is foreign and her accent is a bit tricky to decipher on the phone.

From my conversation with the vet, I would presume that the lab that tests the swab also recommend the cure. She was wittering on about metronidazole not being on the "list" but Baytril being the thing to take.

Perhaps, by knowing the drugs, Suzanne might be able to shed some light on this topic.

Baytril is an antibiotic commonly used by vets. Never heard of the other one and I'm not sure what the difference is?

Is there any improvement in the dogs? Are they back on their normal diet?

This must be costing you a fortune!

Hi Tree - Metronidazole is a antibacterial medication that is used to treat anaerobic infections within the GI tract (gut) caused by various bacteria - too complex to elaborate further.

Baytril (Enrofloxacin = trade name) is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial activity - it has a broader spectrum of activity (ie kills more) than Metronidazole.

Make sure you wash your hands well around the dogs to minimise spreading any of these bugs to yourself or indeed back & forth to the dogs!

hazel, the dogs are back on normal food and their bottoms aren't quite back to normal. they had a tablet on wednesday evening and another tonight so perhaps i'm expecting too much too soon. we shall see.

as for costing a fortune, yeh tho two lots of baytril was £53.06 - i'm wondering if they've missed off the cost of the lab test on the swab. i won't be asking in case it jogs someone's memory !!
