Eating poo - too much!
Permalink Closed

Think our two dogs seem to be hogging this part of the forum!

Anyways, I think we have raised this before but I'm trying again as it is driving my nuts!

When Pearly gets off lead she gets that nose of hers to the ground and sniffs out poo and unless I get to her first she takes a nibble and then scoffs a sausage or two. This morning she had three goes at three different poos. Some folk say it it to do with diet but I'm not convinced - she gets a dry balanced food (Autarky) which she enjoys. We add veg sometimes too.

She has always been a minger though - first time we saw her she was lapping up another dog's sick as if her life depended on it!

We made the mistake of shoving a muzzle on her but we learned the hard way when she came running back to us with it covered in muck.

Suppose my questions are:

- I take it this is something we have to accept if she is off lead?

- If she eats poo will this make her sick? - she is wormed regulalrly

Thanks

You might have seen this already but here's a link that might interest you Steve: http://www.petbehaviourcentre.com/articles/a_poo.htm

When I am out with Casper I quite often meet up with a dog walker and he uses the training discs mentioned in the article and they are pretty amazing! If all the dogs are getting a bit rowdy or one is getting bullied he just throws the discs on the ground and almost every dog turns their head and stops doing what they're doing. Maybe you could try the discs with Pearly? It would mean seeking out poos for training though! LOL!

The article mentions dogs that have been kennelled eating their own poos and I have heard of this before from the Dogs Trust. There were a few kennels that never needed poos picked up in, because the dogs had already done it . The problem with that is that they then get in the habit of eating poos and they just do it out all the time. Mahybe this is what Pearly did - was she kennelled? I am no expert, but hopefully the article will help.

As for it making her sick - I have no idea, sorry!

Hope the article helps a bit.
Jane

Also the remote controlled collar that is mentioned in the article worked well for a lady I meet when I am out walking - her flat-coat retriever always jumped up on anyone it met and she used the collar so that she could spray it when her dog was off the lead and went to jump up on people. I think it is quite expensive though... and it depends on your opinion on those sorts of collars too...

Eeeeeooooowwww! Kai has always had a bit of a 'taste' for poo, but its getting worse! Always in our garden and always his own, now he's eating it straight after he 'goes'.

Read the article Jane recommended and I think I've made it worse, cleaning up to quick & making it a competition. O well I will try giving him a treat after he's 'gone' and clear up when he's indoors.
