Hi Lorraine, if your friend is looking for a pure bred Whippet she might have more luck buying one from a breeder as a pup as there's not really a 'market' for abandoned Whippets. She could also try the Whippet Club of Scotland who may know of ex-show whippets that are looking for pet homes, their number is 01555 871208.

Anyone approaching GAL as you say doesn't get to pick the dog however they can specify the type they want so if your friend wants to apply she can specify that it's a whippet or whippet cross she's after (NOTE: We really don't get than many of these types of dogs in) Finally worth noting it's not our policy to home 2 dogs at the same time unless the dogs have a history of living together..
