We all like sharing our 'poo problems' so here's another!.....
I ride a horse a couple of times a week at a local yard, his name's Fred.
I've been thinking for some time that my lovely climbing rose would love some of Fred's manure to help it flourish (worrying I know, but Grandad swore by it!) So, I collected my carrier bag full of the manure today before I came home and deposited it around the base of the rose. I suspected that their may be some interest in it when the dogs were let out so piled a number of stones around the base of the plant to cover the manure up.
I now realise what a stupid thing it was to do!..... I let the 3 dogs out to do their ablutions - whilst Jessie (the border collie) was waiting at the door to be let in when I went to look, the 2 greyhounds, Amber and Alfie, were found to be licking their lips around the rose tree! To my horror they had devoured the lot!!
I suspect that this evening may be an evening of upset tummies, sickness, and possibly a nice deposit for Mum to clean up (but I guess I made my bed, so I have to lie in it!) Meanwhile I am sure that Jessie will look down her nose at the silly dogs and say "I told you so" !!
Would be interested to know if anyone else had had this little adventure too, and what the consequences were! Kate x
Never thought of that Nora but not sure I would want to risk the poor roses! Maybe I should take it to Fred (the horse) as a gift..... see if he's as daft as they are! Kate x
I had an 'aha!' experience reading your post, Kate - we were wondering today why Bonnie was picking up soil from the vegetable patch and nibbling at it. I dug some manure in earlier this year (shop bought bags of well-rotted farmyard manure), and that was probably what she picked out!
As I mentioned elsewhere, both our beasties hoover up the guinea pig poos after the runs are moved around on the lawn; I'm assuming it's good for them.
I am pleased to report that Amber & Alfie seem none the worse this morning. Alfie didn't let me down and left me a nice parcel to wake up to this morning (thankfully on the puppy pad though!) - he is a big baby after all ! Amber managed to wait until she got outside. What a laugh!...... Another day in the life of a greyhound owner - never a dull moment eh?!!
You could try some of the older poo in future. Where we walk they exercise horses and if it is fresh Tara will try and eat it. But if it is well matured she leaves it alone.
Agree with above, Biscuit only goes for the fresh stuff - throwing it about and giving it a chomp - old manure not attractive to him. Sometimes I think Biscuit really does it for devilment, in the hope I'll shout and start chasing, so I now ignore him, and he leaves it sooner.
