Fiona, I totally agree - I like my pets to have hair. We've had tropical fish in the past (younger daughter's); never again. Too much work for no cuddles at all!

Greyhounds are definitely the opposite end of the scale (no pun intended, but hey...) with not much work and and a maximum of cuddles.

The snake is from a rescue/rehoming centre and technically not ours, by the way, but staying on a long term fostering arrangement, if I understand correctly. The big advantage is that we have easy access to expert advice. My daughter pestered me for at least 2 years to get a snake, whereas it took her only six weeks or so to get Piper into our family!

Beautiful snake and rats. Love the brown and white ones. Never been to sure about animals with pink eyes though I'm sure they are just as lovely though

Just found out that we are getting a giant African land snail for a pet from my sister in law Children very excited and have decided to call it Donald.

Will be interesting to see what Blue makes of it at least it shouldn't set off his chase instinct...

Thanks Fiona.  I don't think Erin minded one way or another about winning but I was certainly chuffed.

When I got my first two rats the tails were probably the aspect I was slowest to adjust to but now I actually love them.  When the four youngsters I have now are all seething about my neck and shoulders it's a lovely feeling when they wrap their tails around my face or ears or any available appendage in order to reach out as far as they can to nosey about elsewhere.

I think the snake looks great.  I like snakes but probably prefer furry pets for myself too ;)

I have a friend who has been into those Giant snails for ages.  They're amazing beasts and she really loves them...   (she's also been a ratty person but not greyhounds)

Maybe i'm being a bit dense but where does a giant land snail live??? Do you just leave it to wander off round the garden or do you keep it in a tank of some sort.

My son just asked me this and was quite disgusted that mum ( who should know EVERYTHING ) didn't have a clue.

With them coming from warmer climates they have to be kept indoors in a fish tank with compost at the bottom to bury in. Aparently they like to be taken out now and then for a rinse under the tap and a cuddle

Daz gets this sometimes! He's not too keen on the first bit

I'd be afraid that he'd confuse a giant snail with the peanut butter Kong he gets if he has to be left home alone

We already make sure that his toys don't look anything like rats.

Our latest pets? belong to my stepson Andrew. He aquired two stick insects from the janitor at his school and I cannot believe how big the are getting. Seemingly you do not need a male for them to have young and the thought of all these young appearing makes my skin crawl. Guess who has to check them and give their foliage a spray everday when he is not here, yip! you guessed it. Thank goodness they are in a tank. Nora

Donald?!

Loads of people are getting into snails, they are known as GALS! I don't really fancy them much, I think it's because you can't really see the expression on their faces, same with the stick insects. They're not really pets like rats and dogs are, you don't get anything back from them.

How big is a giant snail? As an avid gardener who disposes of snails (and slugs) with a bucket of salt water, I couldn't really get enthusiastic about a pet snail, however exotic. Although I do like the ramshorn snails in the pond... they keep the pebbles clean.
