Took Biscuit off to the vet today for checking out itchiness, scratching in his armpits, the worrying bit is small lumps under the skin. He has been moulting his puppy coat, but the rest all looks healthy.


Vet says the scratches are very irritated, gave him a steriod injection for immediate relief, and he has a week on antibiotics.  He was, and usually is, very good at the vets, and she said he was in good health and looks otherwise.  We are hoping this is a temporary summer thing, with his running in the woods, grass etc., and this course will sort him.


He already gets James Wellbeloved, olive oil, oily fish etc., and the rest of his skin looks fine.  It doesn't help his underneath is quite bald of hair.


Any other suggestions, or knowledge of what can irritate their thin skin outside??

Hi Valerie - out of interest what did your vet say was causing the itchiness and lumps? and the main thing is Biscuit is healthy and you had a qualified professional have a look at him.

Vet is hopeful that it's just an "itch/scratch" cycle kicked off by some initial scratches, then they scab, then he scratches etc.  She hopes that because they are confined to one area, it's not a skin problem, but if this persists, we will probably need to get him tested.  He has no fleas, no dandruff, and she says he looks well, so hoping this is isolated.


Just wondering if there were plants or anything, because he is out in the woods, running in and out of a lake and thru rough grass if it may have irritated.  Vet says the thin skin is very suseptible if broken through the scratching, and bacteria may have got in which just keeps the cycle going, so fingers crossed.

A wee bit of aloe vera gel smoothed onto the itchy bits will help to soothe and cool his skin.

I'm afraid I have no advice or suggestions to make about Biscuits itch but just wanted to say awwwww he is just gorgeous

Fingers crossed the antiobiotics do the trick and the itch clears up.

I've got a tube of good organic aloe vera gel, and as soon as Biscuit see's me lifting it - he hides from me!  The smell seems to upset him, or it's reminding him of getting his trouser potatoes removed, cos that's when I used it on his stitches before.


Defo think the jag and antibiotics are showing an improvement, because we don't have to intervene so much in his scratching.  When we saw him scratching, we would rub his tummy to try and save him breaking the skin so much - so we are getting a bit more peace from it!! Otherwise he seems fine.

aww, lovely biccy - he looks great in that picture on the stairs


odd about his reaction to the aloe vera gel tube tho - i used it on dave when he was neutered and he's quite happy to have it spread over him now.  can't think of anything else that would be as soothing for biscuit so i guess you'll have to keep on with the rubby-tummy !!

Dogs can be allergic to grass etc.  One of my neighbours' dog suffers from this in the summer and gets an irritated tummy every year.  Another dog that I know has suddenly started a persistent itch-scratch thing and she is over 10 years old.  Like Biscuit she has had a steroid injection and is a lot better.


If he won't tolerated AloeVera gel - you could try a smear of Sudacrem.  It's available from Boots or other chemists and is actually for nappy rash, but is great for soothing and healing any skin irritation.  My vet recommended it to me so it is definitely ok for dogs.
