I have just had a food allergy test done for Harley as he has been having some problems with a painful abdomen. He is currently on pain killers and his kidney levels are up a bit (preventing the vet from sedating him to at the moment).
The test results show he his allergic to beef, lamb and white fish. I don't normally give him those foods but have been giving him markies since I have had him and they contain mixed meat derivitives. So we have cut them out and replaced with James Wellbeloved Turkey snacks and some chicken biscuits.
Hopefully we will see an improvement in him and less problems with digestion.
The test was done by York labs via the vet - £150 but we can claim it back on insurance fortunately.
Thanks for your comments - I will keep you updated on his progress.
I am thinking of making some home made dog biscuits too as have found a few recipes on the internet (see my other post in this section). Will let you know if they pass the Harley tasting session!
Just a quick update - we went to the vet today as Harley has been on his new treats for a couple of weeks (James Wellbeloved Turkey flavour crackerjacks) and has been kept away from any of the ingredients he is allergic to.
He had his abdomen examined and showed no reaction at all, unlike the last few times when her nearly hit the roof when the vet touched him there. Also his legs and feet were checked as he is still limping a bit (he has been off his painkillers for a week too).
The good news is he seems to be fine now - and the vet think his pains must have been due to his food allergy. He is definately producing less waste and it is much easier to pick up now so that's a good sign.
Hopefully he is completely recovered but I will keep an eye on things. He might have some slight arthritis but nothing too serious- think the stiffness is just due to getting older.
(He doesn't have any corns on his feet either so the limp is a bit of a mystery.)
