Brook & Cats
Permalink Closed

Hi,

Just a wee question regarding cats.  Brook is very good with cats, literally just looks away from them or leaves the room.  My male cat still hisses at her, which is fine, she knows her place, but my other female cat (Sadie) is not aware of the danger of dogs basically (they are not outdoor cats).  So Sadie is very comfortable still belting around the house burning energy and jumping past Brook.

Now, this was all fine and I thought things were getting better, Sadie getting closer to Brook for a sniff and vice versa.  However, last night Sadie was walking on the back of the couch and Brook put her nose up to smell and it looked like she was trying to catch Sadie with her teeth!! I shouted NO and Brook put her head down and looked away from Sadie straight away.  Later in the evening, Sadie was running around and Brook was very interested sitting up, ears alert and looking like she wanted to join in (unsure if this would be in a friendly manner).

If I am not in the house I do seperate them so thats not a problem, but should I be concerned about Brooks interest in Sadie?  I also think there is a slight jealously thing happening, when Sadie comes onto the couch for a clap, so does Brook!

Any advice would be great, and thought it was a wee question until I started typing, but trying to give as much info as possible.

Cheers
Carole x

It is a tough one, and I do not blame you for wanting to be cautious. It does sound as if Brook is taking more interest and even with the best intentions to play, things can get out of hand when animals are excited. The coming up for a clap when petting the cat it would seem to me as a case of " don,t forget me too ", and can lead to jealousy. All you can do is monitor the situation and make Brook aware that NO means NO when it comes to the cat. Hope this helps. Nora

Hi Carole

I have a cat and 2 greys. Ziggy has never shown any interest in Jasper (the cat) but Vernon had to be detrained as he was really keen. The best way I found to teach him was to give treats when the cat was close so it is associated with good things happening.
Now after 4 months Vernon and Jasper can sit really close and they have a good sniff at each other but no more interest than that.
I suppose Brook has been used to cats in the past but every new cat is a stranger so he will have to get used to their movements. Maybe your cat is more energetic than those he had in the past.
Also in my experience when the dog gets too close the cat always wins!!!

Thanks for all your opinions on this one, I am not overly worried about it at this stage and I'm sure it will work out.  I was just unsure if I should say NO to Brook or treat her when Sadie is close.  But sure Siouxsie will see me right!

Cheers
