Has anyone got any tips on how to make moving home less stressful for Blue?

We are moving next week and he can tell something is not right. I think he is in denial as he stressed one of the packed boxes whilst we were out.

Any suggestions would be grately appriciated

Thanks for that Amanda,

Moving is stress personified I don't know about Chad but I'm plenty stressed already and I havn't even started yet... just sold and chosen a new home but not all the form filling and packing!

I am dreading it and its still weeks away (I don't want to hear what packing all the house up is like, I last did it 14 years ago and had less stuff then) Hmmm I don't think you will find me on here in September!

I will be interested in hearing how your move goes in the meantime and hope Blue is ok, lets hope he doesn't start howling again at the new house. I just know our Chad will start that barking stuff again!

Hope you are all tranquil and calm and move somewhere lovely - then it will be worth it !

Em xx

Seems to be a time for moving. My house is going up for sale at the weekend and ive put an offer in for a place in Edinburgh so i'll hear tomorrow if ive got it. So ive got my fingers crossed. Hopefully Blue will be fine aslong as he has all the people and things familiar to him around him.

Although i have posted that Angus' weight loss could be due to the stress of moving, I was lucky enough to have had the keys to my new house a few weeks before the old one was being handed over, so i was able to get a lot of familier smelling stuff into the new house before the dogs went in. I did a lot of travelling back and forth in those weeks and the dogs came with me a lot of the time.

On the actual day of the move, it was only the really big stuff that needed transported like sofas, bed, units etc and that was all moved and in, in about 2 hours. My dogs were in the back of my car for that time and travelled with me to the new house. when i got there i took them out for a walk then back in the car until everything was unloaded which took about 45 minutes and because the majority of the stuff was already in, the dogs basically went from the car straight onto their sofa.

Hopefully Blue wont be too stressed about the move. fingers crossed the move goes smoothly.

Hi amanda, hope your move goes well, I'm sure Blue will adapt pretty quickly once you actually get to your new place, first thing to do when you get there is get some of his familiar atuff around the place so he starts to feel at home right away, sure he'll be fine!..

Its good to hear all this advice as i have been sucessful in buying a place in Edinburgh and i move to my new place on 28th September. Hopefully Millie will be fine but i worry as she is a very sensitive girl.

Just out of interest, what you most of you do when you are viewing your own house?  Obviuosly doesnt look good to potential buyers if the place is full of dogs! I had my first viewing last night but just stuck the dogs and their stuff out in the car. Was only for an hour but on Sunday they will have to be in it for 2 hours. I hope its not too hot. My house has never felt so empty when i had hidden all their beds and bowls etc, it felt weird being dogless, i didnt like it

Hi Jennifer

We put all of Blues things in the garage. On Sunday view's (thankfully we needed just the 1 week to sell) I took the 3 kids and Blue to the park for 2 hours. Strange the people who bought the house came on an evening when Blue and the kids were in the garden. They adore dogs and have 2 spanials the fact the garden was dog proof was the selling point.

Could your bloke take the dogs for a couple of hrs?

I hated putting all Blue's things away as he is a big part of the family but just keep telling yourself the dogs will be happier in the new place.

Good luck

A

Thanks Amanda for the advice. My bloke stays at the other side of town so doubt he would come all the way over here (hour and a half on the bus) to take the dogs for a few hours. He likes the dogs but not that much lol.

To be honest, i wouldnt trust him with my babies anyway. He'd probably let Millie run away or something and i'd end up killing him. At least i can see them outside if they are in the car. I know they'll be there when i return

Banish the hounds (or their stuff)!!!

I did mull over what the best course of action was too but do you know I never moved them at all - in fact it would have been cruel to move poor Tig. My son/husband held Chad so as not to assult anyone again.....

The first man who came round got ,well floored, after Chad butted him in the ***!!! It was funny!I am laughing now thinking about it - Surprisingly he came back for a second viewing but chose the other house he had also looked at twice.I figured if that didn't put them off then nothing would! My philosophy is love me love my dogs - it is their home too.

The house was always immaculate though and the lawn cut (not a blonde Chad hair in sight) It nearly killed me, especially when no one else was home to help!

Em and Chad xx

I see what you mean Emma, it is the dogs house too, and its ok if you have someone to hold the dogs for you or somewhere to put them. I think it depends on the situation though. Im in a one bedroom flat, little space to move as it is without folk tripping over 3 large dogs. The flat is small and looks cluttered with all the dog beds and their toys etc lying about. Its such a small place i have to try and make it look bigger in any way i can and if that means removing the dogs and their beds for a few hours then thats what'll have to happen.

I removed some of the dog douvets but left a bed in the bedroom and left the douvet in the livingroom. Lenny greats everyone with a big cheesy grin and a whipping tail. I did hold him back a little but I didn't shut him out and can't exactly shut in a room since they seeing all your rooms. I think I only had one or two viewings that weren't too keen. After the initial greeting he'd go lay on the sofa so that was fine. I did get asked by about three people if I'd include the hounds in the sale! One in particualr was more interested in them than in the house. If the dogs are well behaved and go and lay down once the initial interest is over then there is no problem. I got 12 offers so couldn't have mattered.

My sister came and picked them up on the morning of the move and they stayed at her house for the day then she brought them to the new house in the evening. Went really well and I just made sure all the doggie beds etc were in place for them. First thing I did was take them for a run and when we got back they settled a bit better. Took about a week for them to be completely relaxed.

Forgot to say. I did my packing in dribs and drabs over the few weeks I had so the dogs didn't really notice the changes and so didn't stress.

Have to say i agree with you Jennifer, we all know that because of their laziness grey's can easily live in a one bedroom flat but there's nothing surer to make a room shrink than having a few hounds in it. Think it would be hard for some prospective buyers to see beyond the dogs to the space that's there!!

Hope your viewings go well today.

Thanks well i only had one viewer, but its only been up for sale since friday afternoon so i cant really complain. Plus there is a hearts-celtic game on so 20,000 people at that, and the festival was at the start today and had a huge parade up the town so probably not a lot of folk looking for houses today. Maybe next week things will pick up. Dogs are back in house now. Were fast asleep in car when i went out to get them, they seemed quite happy

Hi All

When we moved last time, everything was packed up except our bedroom.  As Wills and Millie had their beds in there, they weren't too stressed.  They knew something was afoot and followed us about but were quite happy because their spaces were still there.  On the day of the big move, I got the dogs into the car and took them with me to the new house.  We stayed there and I moved boxes etc that were arriving at regular intervals (we did the move ourselves with the help of family) and the dogs were given free run of the new house and garden to get their bearings.  They were quite happy messing about in the garden and examining every nook and cranny.  It was a very stress free day (for the dogs anyway)!

Well we have moved and are settled (well sort of) Blue was great and didn't start up with the early morning singing. We had a few teething problems. He managed to escape and find his way next door to play with their dog (they know Blue and were rather pleased at his visit!). We were all about hysterical until we found him. Fences were altered very quickly.

It's the little things that make you wish your dog could talk. Blue runs for cover every time the door bell rings and wont enter the living room for 10 mins or so. It is sort of a buzz noise rather than the usual chime. Whether it reminds him of bad times or he just finds it offensive who knows but getting a new door bell is high on the list of priorities!

Goodness - moving house is stressful enough without escapees! Al least you're settled in now

Best wishes in the new house

probably best that you found out about Blue's little escape route early on, at least now you have had a chance to fix it.

Hope your all very happy in your new home.

Amanda, congratulations on the house move.  At least Blue only escaped to next door !!  Once your door bell is changed, no doubt he'll settle completely   Is he still looking lovingly at Hazel ??

Amanda,

To say I am green with jealousy is an understatement! I am really pleased to hear that your move went off as planned and that Blue wasn't too distressed. I hope you get the bell changed soon! at least he has a new playmate next door!

As for me well ... I think I will be a while yet. To cut a long story short my buyer lost their buyer and then secured a new purchaser. Just got over that and the same day my parents buyer heard the news and offered on a bungalow with no chain. How this is still allowed to happen I don't know! but the law needs ammending!!!

They secured a new buyer almost immediately. Then I got a call to say that the new buyers had lost their buyer and are back on the market again. I have no idea if my buyer is still on, I am unable to phone the estate agents as I am so low. I think I have cried as much as I did when I had my breakdown in 2000 and I am really trying to keep it together for the sake of the others.

My poor Dad (76) filled in his pond after re-homing all his fish and dug up his garden as the first buyer did not want any plants and told him to take what he could save. He had the most amazing garden! They are all really sad too. The kids are also gutted and I cannot believe our bad luck!

Take Care All Em x

Em. How awful for you.  Please be strong - easier said than done, I know, but Ii'm thinking of you (for what it's worth!)

As you are well aware, moving is an extremely emotional time at it's best - at worst it's exactly what you're going thru.

I wish I could say something to make it all better for you but my magic wand has gone on strike.

Much love and many good thoughts from Teresa, xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Oh Em my heart broke for you when I read your post. We lived in Newcastle before moving here and when selling our house the lady who bought it had been gazumped twice. We had the option of doing it to her too but couldn't and I don't know how people live with themselves who do. Shame you can't move up here

It must be hard to keep it together we are all here for you take Chad for a long walk when things get to you I always find this helps.

Thinking of you

Amanda

BTW door bell has been changed this house is Blues sanctuary and we will not have him being scared in it

Thanks for the support I am having a really, really bad year!

Today I got the news that our buyer has got a cash buyer who is eager to go through quickly. It sounds slightly dodgy because they are a private sale but my estate agent knows of them and she says they have several properties around the town. One in a very exclusive part therefore they have the funds she is sure! Fingers crossed!

My folks have no buyer and the house we want will go back on the market if we do not get a move on securing a new buyer -because they have found somewhere to go too. I have decided that I will let my sale proceed and move out (aghhhh homeless!!!) All furniture will need storing (can afford that as no bills to pay) and live with my folks! There will only be room for two at my Mums and the others will have to move to Kevins parents (have not asked them yet!) I am just hoping it all settles down and we can bribe the in-laws to take Adam as they are near his school! To be honest the idea of six of us living in my Mums 2 bed bungalow and trying to show it off and sell it is not really an option! Please all cross paws, fingers and toes for me!

Em xx

Hi All,

Good news is we both have buyers again!!! Both have missed out on other houses and want quick progress. Our house we want have waited for us (there are some decent folks around after all)!

It feels too good to be true and I am not allowing myself to get excited but please all keep your fingers (and paws) crossed! Will keep you posted if I have any good news!

Em and Chad xx

Amanda - glad to hear that your house move went well and that you're settling in. We've seen Phil a couple of times on the wee dual carriageway leading into Longniddry, no doubt rushing home for tea. Hope you two, the children and Blue are all well.

Emma - we'll all be quietly and unobtrusively keeping our fingers crossed for you.....
