Make them think!
Permalink Closed

I was just sitting on the floor playing with the dogs and toys etc and was thinking what i could do to make them think. I like to keep making up new games to keep them interested. I went and got 3 mugs and hid a treat randomly under different mugs. I pretended i was putting a treat under each mug so they wouldnt know which one it was really under. They all thought this was a great game!! What games do you play with your dogs?

Very clever!
Must try it with the dogs. Plastic cups though as Vernon has the grace of an elephant!

We do the hide-the-treat game too. Also, we play hide-and-seek. I hold the dogs whilst Steve hides somewhere in the house. He blows the whistle and the dogs go mad rushing round trying to find him to claim their treats!! Works well for enforcing their recall to a whistle when outdoors.

Hide the treat under a cup?? Neo would just eat the cup as well.

I play hide and seek too Fiona, it's a great way to keep the kids amused and play with the dog at the same time, only problem is we are running out of places to hide!! And i'm sure the neighbours are being deafened by my mini-elephant bounding up and down the stairs in all the excitement.

We play hide-and-seek with treats - but only with Bonnie. Piper somehow cannot grasp that the treat is no longer in the hand...

We have also encouraged Bonnie, who is naturally talkative, to request her breakfast. Initially I merely used to ask her 'what do you want', but now we usually have a little sing-song, either Hound Dog or How much is that doggie in the window?
Sort of a call-and-respond thing, where I go "You aint nothing but a hound dog" and then Bonnie has to do her bit, which varies from a little sneeze or huff to a 'raoul' or 'uhura' to a full bark. She usually finishes on a flourish, and her voice is much better than mine.

We play hide the treats and hide and seek, with some hilarious consequencies. I tried the hide a treat under the cups and Cas gets it every time, but poor Sasha just does not have a clue. Nora

We play chases round and round through the kitchen.  We have two doors into the kitchen - one from the hall and one from the living/dining room.  This is wonderful as a mini-race track and Tigger and Millie love playing chases with us round and round.  We also play this round the rest of the house (with some hiding involved).  Millie is a bit fly though - she uses any available mirrors to try and spot where you are.

Snap Jennifer - I've got the same triangle toy thingy for my three however it has long since ceased looking like the one in your photo!  Wills used to use it as a sling for one leg (put leg through toy and lift it up) and what with Tigger and Millie killing it regularly it is now looking rather sad.

Expansion on the hide-and-seek theme: whenever I have a good empty container, I put a treat inside and give it to Bonnie to open. Pringles tubes are great, empty egg cartons taped shut with masking tape work but are a bit too easy. Ideally I like to give her something that she actually has to prise open rather than dismantle!

We also do 'give' with specific instructions, e.g. give Bonnie a note or an item to carry to another member of the family, such as 'give Martin'. She will carry a note to Martin when he is working upstairs, but takes it off him again and brings it back downstairs. With good reason: the treats are kept downstairs! - Have tried to tell Bonnie to 'give Piper' but that meets with flat refusal...
