Folks, real urgent foster time, I've a Greyhound that broke it's hock during a race at 8pm this evening, the dog is still with it's trainer. Plan of action is to get it to a vet tomorrow for treatment and from there I'm looking for a foster home where it can re-cooperate for a few months till it's fit and able to be rehomed.
I'll be real honest and say it was a bit of a fraught conversation with the trainer in terms of trying to save the dog so I actually don't have any information about it other than the broken hock, for the sake of talking we'll assume it's male probably about 3ish and most likely to be black..
If you can help please email daivd@gal.org.uk or call me on 0870 888 7277
thanks to everyone who got in touch - might help next time if I put the right email address on my posts
I picked up the dog at stupid o' clock this morning, he's at the vets now, his trainer gave him a big early breakfast as a send off which means he won't get operated on today(!) The hock looks like it's defo broken in at least one place but x-rays tomorrow will confirm. We've managed to re-jig some of the dogs at the kennels so he'll be going up there into the comforts of Rachels kitchen after his op, will have another wee think about him then.
I was mostly right about him, he is male, he is 3ish (well he celebrated his 4th birthday last Thursday) not Black though, he's a lovely Brindle boy, fawn brindle over his back legs and torso turning to a really dark brindle over his neck and face. He's a nice big boy, all waggy tails despite his pain, screamed like a baby when the vet bandgaged him, typical Greyhound really!...
Took this whilst we were waiting on the vet this morning...
What a handsome fella. Bless the wee soul. It never ceases to amaze at just how loving and forgiving these creatures are despite all that humans put them through. I think it speaks volumes as to his character the fact that despite all he's been through, he still manages to find a tail wag at any show of kindness.
Good luck to King and here's hoping he finds a kind, loving forever home very soon.
He's gorgeous and I hope everything goes well for him at the vet. He's so brave in his photo although he must be in a lot of pain! Let us know how he's getting on.
Christine
ps Just brilliant of Rachel and Eddie to help out! He'll get the best of care there.
Hi Folk's, not good news I'm afraid, King got his x-rays done this morning, one of the bones in his hock has a 'good' break (the vets words - good = serious) and one other bone in the hock is completely shattered. In addition to that he has severe tendon damage, finally King appears to be having trouble doing the toilet (this may just be the stress of the vets however)
Anyways, the leg is too badly damaged for our vets to even consider trying to repair so he's been taken up to the Glasgow Vet School to be looked at by the leg experts there, he was taken up earlier this afternoon so I'm just waiting for a update from there however it may be tomorrow before I hear anything.....will keep you all posted.
Just heard from the vet school..Firstly King is now called 'SIMON', the nice vet thats looked after him all of yesterday and today and who took him up to the vet's school earlier for us gave him the name so Simon it is.
In summary the leg is a 'right mess', the bone in his hock with the 'good' break has actually splintered into 2 piecies, another bone in the hock has basically shattered into a million little bits and in addition there's major ligament damage. The vet at the Vet's School reckons the leg has actually been crushed given the trauma he can see so it sounds like he's fallen on top of it or possibly another dog in the same race has fallen on it.
I've got to be pragmatic about these types of things, weight up the pro's and con's. Getting the leg amputated would cost about £500, getting the leg repaired will cost £3,000 (thats the vet schools estimate)
I'm sitting here with the money we took at the GALa on Sunday all bagged and ready to go to the bank tomorrow, £3,000. I guess it was money GAL didn't have this time last week so if we don't have it this time next week so be it...Simon is goany get his leg all fixed up tomorrow...
Dave, what about a save simon's leg appeal to try to recoupe some of the costs? It might not generate loads but if it saves this big lads leg without using up all of the GALa takings it would help a bit. I know it's holiday time and we are all strapped for cash at this time of year but think the brave boy deserves it.
Oh god love the poor soul. Here's hoping that all can be repaired for him. I agree with the other two and am willing to make a donation to a Simon's leg appeal. Where am I best making the donation to? There is a "donation" thing somewhere on here, will that do?
Totally agree with what people have said so far. Pay day next Friday so a donation will be sent then. We had an appeal for Rowley so why not have one for Simon.
I've just made my donation through the "I need a home" icon and the donation section there. I'd love to be able to give more but will help out as much as I can.
Good luck to Simon - our thoughts will be with him. Life can only improve from now on.
I guess someone was trying to tell you something with the amount raised being what is needed to repair Simons badly damaged leg. All the best to Simon and hope all goes well for him. I will donate something as soon as I can, but pretty strapped for cash just now after the holidays and car about to go in for it,s service. Please let us know how he gets on the brave little man that he is. Nora

Guys, thanks for your kind words and offers of donations, of course I'm not going to say no to any money however I didn't want to do an 'appeal' this time round, the reason for doing the appeals the last time was basically we didn't have the money to meet the vet bills, this time we do!
I'm always aware that we're always asking for money from you guys anyway, at the mo Lorna and team are looking for sponsors for the 10K run on the 3rd and I'll be collecting my pledges for my own sponsored walk also on the third, thanks guys anyways, if you do want to send anything for Simon just drop me an email david@gal.org.uk or click on the 'how you can help gal dogs' then 'donating' buttons on the main website www.gal.org.uk
If we can't all pull together when there's a crisis, it would be a pretty sad day. People will only give what they feel they can afford and if they want to. I wish I was able to do more, either through fostering, volunteering or fund raising however Dunoon is not the most handy of places when it comes to event attendance.
Whatever you receive in donations to help with Simon's leg just means that there is a little bit more left from the GALa to help other dogs in need.
Hi Folks, firstly thank you all so very much for the donations received to help Simon
Right, he got his op today, I'm pleased to report all went very well, only slight complication is that there was so much swelling and so many drains inserted into his leg that they've had to leave the wound open, sounds yukky but once the swelling goes down and some of the drains are removed he'll get sewn back together. The outlook is pretty good, vet is hoping for some mobility back in the leg by Sunday and if this is the case then he'll get 'home' to Rachels on Monday.
There is some doubt on him actually getting to Rachels, he's such a nice dog all the staff at the vets school are totally smitten with him..
That's fantastic news about Simon. I'll keep my fingers crossed that everything goes to plan and the healing process gets underway without any hitches. We all wish him a speedy recovery and a new home very very soon.
Good for Simon - he is one lucky boy - continued crossed fingers for his recovery.
Greyhounds are such strange dogs aren't they. In the face of appalling pain they are able to remain cheerful and uncomplaining, but clip a toenail or give them an injection and they scream the place down.
