Just thought I would let you know what happen to Kiera, as you might see just lachie about for the next week or so.
Keira was having the time of her life bouncing round the fields at our family croft outside Oban on Sunday. It was about 9.30pm & starting to getting dark. My boyfriend heard an almighty yelp & keira came slowly back up the field. As it was getting dark & she was limping Andrew thougt she had cut her foot. Then she collasped. I was at home in Hamilton, & he phoned me not calm but not panacking, saying she had a hole in her chest. He carried her up the field to the croft & neighbour who was a nurse came to check her. She was not gushing blood but had a whole about the size of a 10p piece. My boyfriend got her in the car & took her to the vet. All the while I was crying, as we both thought she wasn't going to make it, by myself however many miles away waiting on the call.
The vet took her in & called at 1230 to say she had a bit of stick in her & it was removed. She was very lucky as all her main nerves & artierys were missed. They were worried as it ws around her leg area as well but she can now walk on it. Andrew found the branch in question today it was not very pretty & went about 6 inches into her. Keira has come down the road today & even came to greet me at the gate when i got home from work. She is in alot of pain with alot of stiches but we have strong painkillers so she should be comfortable. Our dog walker is going to come and let her out the back, & family member will have them on Friday. She will be out of action for at least 2 weeks.
I feel awful. Andrew is quite tramatized & doesn't want to let her off the lead again. I THINK IT WAS A FREAK accident & could have just as well happen to Lachie.
We had just got her settled & couldn't imagine her not part of our lifes.
She is going to be fine & will get pampered for the next week or so. Lachie wagged his tail when he saw her come out of the vet & sniffed each others nose. I think he cares about her.
Poor Keira, that sounds awful. I know the fright you get when things like that happens. My last greyhound ran full speed into a concrete bolder while chasing another dog and ended up ripping the skin on her chest open and had many stitches. You feel so bad for them but its good now Keira is on the way to recovery and being spoilt

What a horrible thing to happen - poor Keira. You must have been out of your mind with worry, especially being so far away from her when it happened. I can imagine how poor Andrew felt as well.
Thank goodness she's ok. Hope she has a speedy recovery and is charging about again soon.
Best wishes from Karen, Graeme, Wills, Millie n Tigger
A Get well soon message to Keira. A very frighting experience for all of you, the problem is with greys that they just don,t have very good brakes and have a job stopping where their supposed to and this is the exact type of injury sustained, do not let it put you of letting her off lead again it was an accident and accidents do happen. Take Care Nora

Here's hoping that Keira bounces back very quickly. She'll forget about it long before you do! Hope both you and Andrew are feeling a little less wobbly now.
Poor Keira I am sure she will be back running about with Lachie soon. It sounds like they have a special bond between them and I am sure that he was worried for her too.
As for you and Andrew you must not blame yourselves it was as you said an accident. It could have happened to either of them or it could have laid there for years without hurting any creature.I am sure once she is healed and you get your confidence back she will be happy to run free and you will be happy to let her!
Hope she is well again and running about soon Em and Chad xx
It must have been awful for you all but especially since you were so far away and getting update's on the phone. Hopefully you can put it all behind you soon and carry on enjoying your beautiful girl.
Poor Kiera. What a terrible fright you must have got. Hope she makes a quick recovery. Its really terrifying just how quick they can badly injure themselves, its as quick as a blink of the eye.
What a nightmare! It'll be understandable if you don't feel like letting her off the lead after this, but you'll have to weigh it up against the enjoyment (and exercise) she gets from a good run. It's a bit like having children; it's not good to 'wrap them in cotton wool', but when something goes wrong you blame yourself.
My two (hounds - the children are past that stage) bomb around like mad things and I often have to bite my lip and close my eyes; I just hope & pray nothing awful like this ever happens to them.
Thankyou so much for all your support. Keira has BOUNCED back (I mean that). At first I thought she had lost her confidence but by Thurs she was bouncing of the Sofas & back to normal. Her wound is healing really well & stitches are due out next week. She is meant to have 2 weeks rest so we are doing shorter walks. I think Keira thinks she is ready for anything but we will just keep things on a low key until her stiches are out.
As for Andrew he is still a bit weary about the off the lead issue but knows it was a freak accident & I think we will go for a beach trip once she is 100%.
The best thing about this accident is it brings about the realisation of just how much she has settled in since we got her in May. It also reminded us we love her to bits & have since day 1.
I will post some pictures of the not so ill one very soon.
P.S You were all right she lapped up the attention so much she now communicates very loudly when she requires a pat. Lachie has also muscled in on this attention.
Glad to hear all is healing well. I know what you mean about the stiches though, Chad had his neuter on Tuesday and is meant to be taking it easy! They just cannot slow down for long can they!
I am sure she will be fine off the lead again real soon. It is more about you two feeling comfortable than her I guess. Will look forward to some piccies of her and Lachie as well.
