MILLIE'S NEW PLOY

We were out for a walk today and Millie was being a bit rough while playing with Wills.  I called on her, she ignored me and continued, I called her again, she ignored me again and continued.  Wills gave a bit of a yelp so she was obviously starting to hurt him so I shouted at her.

This time, she stopped dead in her tracks, looked at me as if to say "what did I do?" When I caught up to her she held one paw up and looked pathetic!  I told her that if she had staved her paw by belting Wills on the side, she was getting no sympathy and carried on walking.  I'd gone about two strides further and looked back (to make sure she wasn't still standing on three legs or limping).  She grinned up at me, wagged her tail and trotted past me with absolutely no hint of a limp.

Will be watching for this next time she gets a row!  Anyone know if animals can be awarded oscars???

They can be so funny.  Biscuit always gives me that one head to the side, wide eyed look as if to say "What did I do?"  His latest ploy is to exploit the fact that I gave him one treat in wet weather to get him out the door for his toilet walk, he is now training me to give him 2 treats before he graces me by following me out the back door at night!!

Our little Gems did a similar thing, although it was when we were at the vets. We needed to take her for the vet to look at her front leg. She was limping on it and couldnt walk very well. The vet asked which leg it was, but of course, we couldnt remember!! We thought it was the front left as that was the leg she was holding up at the time. So the vet flexed and did some reflex tests, all fine. He had turned around to check her file on the computer when the nurse said 'She's holding up the other one now!' Again the vet did reflexs etc but this time Gems had to be muzzled as she would have bitten the vet because we had found the truely sore leg! Whats strange is that she went through the pain of putting her weight on her sore leg whilst pretending it was the other one! She's a crafty wee dog!

My sister in law used to have a spaniel - cute thing (for a wee dog! ).  He had tripped over himself and hurt his foot.  He limped towards her, whining and holding the paw up.  She took one look at himself and said "behave, you're at it"!  She said he almost shrugged his shoulders, walked by and leapt on the bed to settle down for a nap!  Crafty wee monkey looking for a bit of extra attention!

crafty devils !

Years ago, my mum's dog, a black lab cross, cut his paw.  Mum bandaged it and he limped like mad.  Of course, then she had to change the bandage - at which point he walked around as if nothing was wrong.  Put the bandage back on and he's limping again.  Who says they aren't clever??

All this reminds me of my first dog, Mickey. He was a whippet-terrier cross, born a few weeks after me. Whenever he hurt a paw, he'd limp for sympathy. For days afterwards, any time he wanted something or thought he might be in trouble, he'd limp. His only problem was that after a while he'd forget which leg was supposed to be sore, and limp on the wrong one.

Cheers, Graham
