Jane thank you for the update on Casper, I do not know what to say to make you feel better. It seems so unfair for all of this to happen in a dog so young. I can only say you have done right by him so far and I am sure you will continue to do your utmost to make his life as comfortable as possible. Best Wishes for when he returns home and lets just hope the wee scallywag proves them all wrong. Nora

I went to pick up casper this morning from the vet school. He was not even pleased to see me when I went to get him and he cried and whined in the car all the way home. I thought he was acting very strange and not like himself, but I put it down to the stress at being in the vet school for two nights, surgery etc. He just seemed really depressed, not a single wag, and it was even as though he didn't recognise me or was too stressed to look at me.
When I got him home he had mucus & blood diarrhoea. I phoned my own vet, but was reluctant to take him in because I thought he was stressed enough in the car on the way home, and to put him back in the car for another 20 minutes was just too much. So my vet said he would do a house call and come out to see him in a few hours time.
I took Milly out a walk and when I came back Casper didn't even lift his head when we came in. I went over to him pulled his the skin at his neck and saw that he was very dehydrated (he hadn't eaten or drank since we got in) so I phoned my friend who is a vet nurse. She said I should phone back my vets and probably take him in for fluids instead of waiting on the vet to come to my house.
So I went to check him again before I phoned my vet and I couldn't wake Casper up. His eyes were rolling in the back of his head and he wasn't aware of me at all. I phoned my Dad and he came down to help me lift him into the car. He woke up as we took him outside and I was relieved when he stood up in the car as we were driving to the vets. He managed to hobble into the vets and he is still there now getting fluids and blood tests. I have no idea what is wrong with him, if it is connected to surgery or something completely different, but I am obviously worried. I am hoping to collect him at about 9 tonight if he perks up after the fluids. My vet said he would be better at home if he is a bit better, and I totally agree. So I am now just waiting on the phonecall to say whether I can collect him or not.
When he was unconcious I seriously thought that was it, he was gone and it really made me realise how much he means to me. He is everything to me, he is so special.
I am now anxiously waiting for the phone to ring so fingers crossed he is ok. Jane

Poor Casper and you. I have everything crossed that you get him home to his own bed tonight i think it's so much worse if they are kept in and you just don't know what's happening. Hopefully the fluids will do the trick and he perks up quickly.
Let us know how he gets on and give him a huge hug
Oh Jane, how terrible for you, you must be worried sick. Hopefully once the fluids get into his system he will perk up. I have everything crossed for you, you and Casper are in my thoughts.
Good news at last! I got Casper home last night, the fluids did wonders for him! As soon as i went to get him, I could see he was feeling a bit better, his eyes were brighter and he wagged his tail at me. He is still pretty quiet, but I think that's to be expected after surgery. All the blood tests they did showed all his organs normal, but a high red blood cell count which is dehydration. He ate some food this morning, and had a big drink of water, so I am pleased. He gave me a big fright yesterday so I am over the moon to have him home and see him pleased to be here.
I am now starting to question how I got him home from the vet school dehydrated but all that matters just now is that he is ok.
Thanks for all your kind words, I really appreciate it.
Jane

Glad you got him home Jane, and at least some of your worry will be eased. Hope he continues to recover well, no doubt he is getting lots of extra tlc while he rests.
I have just read your first post on Casper about the dehydration and I was in tears thinking the worse, thank god he is OK. What a relief for you all, you give that boy lots of BIG HUGS from us all and tell him he is the BEST xxx to the scallywag, knew he would prove them wrong ,it is hard to keep a good dog down. Nora

What an awful time you've had lately. You must have got a terrible fright on Friday - glad Casper seems to have bounced back. Hope he continues to do well and continues recovering from his op.
Just managed to catch up on your posts Jane. What a horrible and scary time you've had of it. Its really frightening when something happens to them and they can't explain whats wrong and you end up feeling competely useless.
So glad to read he's really picked up for you and best wishes to Casper for a speedy recover from the surgery.
So glad Caspar is OK now. I've just caught up with what's been happening. But what a terrible time you've had with Caspar! Hope things continue to get better.
