Thanks John! Found the thread. Haven't been on the forum for a while.
She went to the vet this morning and he has prescribed a low dose of Incurin tablets. We will take a urine sample (hopefully!) on our next visit to rule out bladder infection but as she is urinating as normal and has no other symptoms its more likely to be due to "sphincter mechanism incompetence", apparently!.
Might be a stupid question, but have you just changed her food recently?
Several months ago, my Sascha (8 yr old GH) leaked (actually quite a large amount!) a few times while lying in her bed during the early evening & we didn't notice until she stood up to go out for her last pee at night. When I took her to the vet the first thing he asked about was food (after checking her over) & funnily enough we had just changed to one of the Hill's brands! After changing her food again we have had no accidents whatsoever.
Might be totally different in Kayri's case - but just a thought
I had thought about that and I changed her food about 2/3 months ago. As it was quite a while ago I dismissed it, but it might be worth mentioning to the vet next time.
Kayri has a sensitive stomach so I was delighted when they brought out a new dog food called Wainwrights. You might have seen it in your local Pets at Home. Its reasonably priced, she actually likes it and it keeps her bottom in ideal condition! She's fussy about James Wellbeloved and won't even look at Burns so I thought I'd found the ideal solution, but, maybe not....
No doubt you've read the threads on this subject and realise there could be different causes. We monitored Tyler for a few months before she received a diagnosis of 'sphincter mechanism incompetence' (incontinence). Her bottom also became constantly stained, which shows quite badly on a white dog!! However, she's been on Propalin medicine for about a year now which has sorted her wee problem! Hope you get Kayri's problem sorted too.
Not my current greyhound, but my other bitch - a spaniel cross - had a urine leak problem. She ended up taking a pill every day for quite a while - sorry, can't remember what it was called but it certainly solved the problem. The vet said there was no particular reason for the leaking but it happened to some ladies - much like us I guess !!
Thanks everyone for your replies. They have been very helpful.
Kayri's incontinence stopped the very next day, after only half a tablet of Incurin. This make me wonder if it's the tablets that have worked very quickly, or maybe it would have stopped anyway?
I've continued to give her half a tablet a day as the vet directed. We're not due to go back until the 28th so I'll (try!) and take a urine sample with me and get that tested and take it from there.
Any tips on getting a urine sample from a bitch?? Run after them in the garden with a bowl I suppose!
Kayri and I were back at the vet today, complete with urine sample! Managed to get a teaspoonful by holding a bowl underneath her in the garden this morning, which was quickly syringed up and emptied safely into a specimen bottle.
She hasn't had any more leaks of urine since starting on the incurin. However, there was some protein in her urine which could indicate infection so she's on a course of antibiotics and her incurin has been reduced to half a tablet every second day.
Back to vet in two weeks with another urine sample (something tells me I can't be lucky twice in a row and the first sample was easy to get!). So we'll see how we get on.
Hiyia, just caught up with reading all the threads as no longer have a home pc, so sneaking on at work.
One of my bitches (11yrs old) started the same thing as your dog and has been on half an incurin tablet once a day for the past 2 years and ive had no problems since. If i stop the treatment at all, she will start to leak again so she is on this permanently.
