Just out of curiousity, how regularly to you get your hounds nail's cut?

I asked the vet about Neo's last week because they look very long and she said to leave it another few weeks as they are fine just now but they have not been cut for months so i just wondered how long everyone else leaves between trims and do you get the vet to do it or cut them yourself (i'm a bit squemish about it to be honest!!)

I suppose the fact that he walks on hard ground a lot of the time will keep them a bit shorter anyway.

Ive had one of my dogs "Eva" for 9years and her  nails have never been cut. I think because she gets walked on hard ground and grass they wear down themselves. The other 2 havent been with me as long but they're nails never seem to need cut either. Think it depends where you walk them.

We got Harry's cut at the vet when he went for his vaccinations but only had a teensy tiny bit shaved off - we thought they looked really long but the vet said they actually were fine. Don't think Pearly has ever had her nails done. Apart from her dew claws. I snipped this myself recently, but found it incredibly stressful as I was worried about hurting her.

If your hounds are regularly walked on hard ground, the nails definitely get worn down by themselves.  Tho greyhound nails are naturally much longer than other breeds anyway.

Daisy won't let me anywhere near her nails - she screams the place down if she sees me opening the drawer where we keep the clippers (big woos!).  I have to try cutting one nail tho - the one on her dislocated toe because it grows towards the toe next to it.  As it doesn't seem to bother her much, I don't do it if I can help it.

Dave, on the other hand, is a big girl when it comes to his nails.  He was laying on the chair behind me (I was on the floor) and I noticed a slight nick in one of his nails.  Out came the clippers and the nail file and he let me cut and file them without even waking up !!!  I almost got out the pink nail varnish but thought that would be pushing my luck !!

I cut Bonnie's nails precisely twice in five-and-a-half years - or rather, I cut some of her nails when she started chewing them. I thought that meant they were too long, but both times I hit a bleeder early on. She runs so much that they're worn down enough.

The experience has made me so squeamish about doing it myself that Piper now goes back to the kennels to have hers done. Only once so far since we've had her (5 months).

None of mine have ever had their nails cut or trimmed.  Again, I think because we spend a lot of time on forestry roads and whatnot they get worn down naturally.  I asked the vet once about Wills' because I thought they were looking a bit long but he pointed out the pink pulpy bit inside and you could see that there wasn't much they could trim off (blessing of having dogs with white nails).

Millie often chews at her nails and has, in the past, chewed it badly enough to make it bleed and sore! That was a bit of a nightmare.  It was a real job getting her to leave it alone long enough for it to heal.
