Help.

I noticed today that Wills has got a white lump growing on his tongue.  I first noticed it this morning but thought it was just a bit of food or fluff or something.  Sadly not - it was still there when he was panting this evening.

At first I thought it was a bit of tooth but it's not as hard as tooth and definately attached to his tongue.  It doesn't seem to be hurting him or causing him any problems but is easily noticeable when he yawns or pants.

Our vet is open between 10am and 11am in the morning so we will be taking a trip there with him.  I am worried sick to say the least.

Anyone got any suggestions as to a cause?

It does sound like a mouth ulcer, but as you know our dogs pick up lots of things and it could be something for example splinter that Wills has picked up and has lodged in the tongue.

I would always recommend a trip to the vets in an instance like this, so you get the right help and advice.

Please let us know how Wills gets on.

Well, my boy has been to the vet this morning and I explained what I'd seen.  From the look on her face, I was dreading the diagnosis.

She had a look and doesn't think it's anything nasty.  She said that cancerous growths tend to look aggressive - red and knobbly or ulcerated but this doesn't.  It looks like a tooth from a distance but up close looks like a white stalk.  Vet reckons it's a fibrous growth - like a pollop.  With Wills being diabetic and getting on a bit, she felt an operation to remove it was going to be more risky so we've decided that it would be best to leave it for a week or so and see if it gets any bigger.  If it does, they'll remove it and cauterise the wound.  If not, he's going to have a lump for the foreseeable future.  It's not causing him any pain or discomfort and it's not causing him problems when he's eating.

It has come up very quickly because it's very noticeable and I'm 100% certain I'd have seen it long before now had it been there.  Other than that, he's in good health and they are pleased with his condition given that he's been nearly 3 years diabetic!

We'll let you know if he has to get it removed but, for the meantime, lots of relief!!!

Great news Karen, i think we all dread the worst when it is a lump of any sort.

I know you will be keeping an eye on it but at least it's not giving him any trouble and hopefully the pesky wee thing will just dissappear on it's own. keep us posted and give Wills a big hug from us all

It may well disappear or drop off of it's own accord, so here's hoping it does.  Best wishes to Wills.

All the best to Wills and lets just hope the mysterious tongue thing goes away on its own accord. Nora

So far, so good.  The horrible lump has stayed the same size.  Everyone who has seen it has commented on how much it looks like a tooth!

Here's hoping it will fall off or something next!
