Liver Problems
Permalink Closed

I'm paranoid because my last dog died of liver complications, and today at the vet I was told Billy has some (as yet) unidentifiable liver issues.

I haven't slept since 6am Monday morning, Billy has been peeing blood constantly, wasn't eating or drinking, and was being very un-Billy-like. He has been tested for everything, and the vet got more and more negative the longer I was in there (went along to the drop-in clinic and was in for over an hour). He is not jaundiced (spelling?!) and still has a good red blood count, but they can't tell me any more until his results come back. Feeling shabby, because he never bothered through any of it (from prostate exam to blood sampling) but when it came to getting anti-biotics and anti-inflammatory needles, he screamed and screamed and shook so much the needle fell out. He looked into my eyes the whole time he was screaming, and I really felt evil...

Anyway, I guess the reason I am on here is because the vet told me liver trouble is uncommon in Greys, and, looking through previous posts, I don't see anything else on the matter here. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Symptoms are: urinating every half hour (blood in urine), panting, restlessness, loss of appetite. The vet says there are five elements in his urine that should not normally be present, and most (or all) are from his liver.

Any advice welcome. Failing that, some false hope would be good...

So sorry to hear about all this upset and worry you are having at the moment. All I can advise is to keep his water bowl filled up at all times (i know more weeing, but it is always a good thing to try this to flush the system) and Billy is in the right hands, your vet will be checking everything.

We are keeping paws and fingers crossed for Billy and just keep thinking positive.

Thinking of you all

x

No experience with greys & liver problems, but when I was a teenager we had an Irish Setter with liver & kidney problems, which were solved by changing her diet. She was on mashed potato, rice and similar things for some time; no meat. I hope Billy's is something similarly easy to treat.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, my vet very kindly came in from her holiday/time off to discuss Billy's test results with me out of hours last night.

I'm still waiting for the results of the urine tests, but the blood tests have shown Billy is in excellent health, and his liver and kidneys are functioning just as they should. This means the problem is just in his bladder. I have been sent away with anti-biotics, anti-inflammatories and a vial. At the end of the medication, I have to collect another urine sample so that it can be compared to his results from Tuesday. The vet thinks it may be a stone, which will mean Billy will need a tube inserted to help him pass it...

At least it is not as bad as I had thought - I did worry excessively, because Billy has a scar on his belly that looks as though he has had an operation at some point, although I have no idea if he has or not. I also worried he had been given drugs during his working career, and his organs had been permanently damaged.

Thanks again everyone, and hopefully Billy won't need an op - if he does, he will be going in one day, and Lizzie will be going in the next!!!

Nora, just an aside here... On the day I took Billy to the vet I saw a woman I thought was you. Her dogs were very like yours, and when she said they had come from GAL, I almost asked her if her name was Nora. Of course it wasn't you, but it was odd meeting someone else with dogs from GAL, as there are so few up here!

Reaaly sory to hear about the worry you have been going through, looks like it is not as serious as you first suspected and i hope results are good and Billy is on the mend soon. It does make it worse when we don't really know their history and all that has happened to them in the past.

Big hugs to Billy from us all. x

Good news indeed that Billy's organs are all in working order! And best of luck with collecting the urine sample. I'm sure your neighbours will be most amused to see you catching your doggy's widdle in a plastic jug, ready for pouring into the vial.... (sorry, I'm not laughing at the situation really - I know how worrying it is when they're sick and we don't know what to do).

Here's to the tablets doing the job and Billy feeling better very soon.

At the start of the year, Angus had a few problems with a suspected liver problem. He was peeing blood and the protein level in his urine was really high, so the vet decided to to a blood test. Blood test came back normal, Angus was put on antibiotics for a week and re-tested. The protein level in his urine was still the same but the vets said that because the blood work was good then they were quite happy that this was Angus' natural level.

Fingers crossed for you and Billy.

Sorry to hear Billy has been going thru it lately.

My old collie/spaniel cross had bladder stones.  It took the vet ages to diagnose.  She was peeing blood but didn't seem to be in any distress.  Took numerous urine samples for testing which, oddly, didn't show up anything much.

In the end, the vet decided on exploratory surgery which turned up about 10 stones of varying sizes.  They were amazing !  Anyway, that sorted everything and she was fine.

Sounds like Billy might be suffering the same thing and the treatment will be just as successful.

Thinking of you, xx

No it was not me or my dogs in Aberdeen, bit far a way for me to take the dogs to the vet. The dogs could not have been as gorgeous as mine though !!!!!! LOL

Let us know how Billy gets on and hopefully he will not need anything major. Nora

Thought maybe it was you on vacation... My dogs looked a bit weird next to them though, they were very small and skinny and my dogs are big and buff (well, Lizzie is big and Billy is buff anyway!)

I got a call from my vet last night, the results of Billy's urine test came in - he has a high amount of bacteria present, but no crystals, so no surgery is needed (phew!) . We are back in on Thursday for another test and some more medication, and hopefully that should clear the problem. Billy is resting at nights now, but unfortunately is a totally stoned on all the medication, wandering about with a daft look on his face and being fascinated with bird feathers...

This is a very tentative sigh of relief.  It sounds like it could be good news.  Will keep my fingers crossed anyway.

Keep us posted.
